1 Jan "The SHAKER & SHAKERESS is severely faulted for Elder
Frederick's articles of late on Jesus & 2nd Thunder. It
is Jan. No. for 1875."

2 Jan (NL) Giles writing to different societies to apologize for Elder
Frederick's articles.
Cabbage seed suit at'Watervliet decided against them by
Judge Jackson of Schenectady. He sets the damages for
Shakers to pay at $5,276.11. The case is to be appealed
from decisions of this Referee.

19 Jan (NL) Report from Wvlt that C. Copley badly hurt in a fall.
20 Jan (NL) Eld Albert Loinas comes from Wvlt & "says they have
resolved to appeal the cabbage suits as all": the --.-par ties
having suits against the Shakers will not settle short of
$15,000 damages."
6 Feb (NL) At 11:30 am a fire was discovered in the woods, west
side of woodhouse west of great house and in 71 minutes
the large woodhouse & sisters' shops, the Great House,
Ministry Shop, Old Eastpl House, ice house, East Barn, Cart
house & dry house at East Barn & cider mill were in ashes.
Also all the cheese, butter, about 8 bbls. sugar, 2 hogs-
heads of molasses, 70 bu. potatoes, 10 bbls flour & all
the household furniture "except a trifle". The 1st Order
left homeless, without food & all the hay & grain for oxen
burned & 1 yoke of oxen. Fire set by a hired man, Charles
Harris.
7 Feb (Sun) Barrels of kerosene oil had been# rolled into Great Gar-
den & was now retrieved; brethren & sisters were carrying
beds to shops or some shelter, some baking & cooking, some
caring for sick. Elder Daniel is nearly dying, got his
lungs badly smoked; and Elder Daniel Grossman suffering
from hard fall & overdoing; Bro Andrew Barrett had his
shoulder broken when he fell with Eld Daniel Grossman from
roof of old infirmary
The North, Second & South Families cooked all night. Hired
men & firemen from Pittsfield toiled hard to extinguish th
flames. The Meeting house took fire but, by most strenuous
exertions, was saved; the infirmary took fire & burned half
through the west door & some of windows & west side.
8 Feb Met to decide where to cook & eat. Decided to cook in the
soap room & eat in ironing room at washhouse. Lodgings
are fixed in every room in washhouse, in old Girls Shop,
in Infirmary, Garret of Office, Seed Shop, Brick Shop,
dairy building, old Infirmary, etc. Some sisters go to
the other families for a time. The CF at present take
meals at 2d Order.
