& learn of their moral, social & spiritual status as a

5 Mar Elder Galen Richmond & Giles go to Lockport to see Frank
Gibbie, the manager of a large canning factory there; then
stop in Syracuse & order a carload of sa^t ; then Galen
went toward Ogdensburgh to see about broom handles .
9 Mar Gould family visited Ministry about their little son, Willie,
4 years old, who is "so troublesome with his mother, the NF
cannot get along with him. Arrange to have him move to
the CF. "
11 Mar Giles returns to Lebanon to start fires in Ministry' and
"get house dry & warm. " Rest return on 15th.

27 Mar (NL) Second Family in debt "and their principal sale branch,
garden seeds, is subject to so great a competition that it
is coinparataively worthless."

10 Apr Meet with Nicholas Briggs of Canterbury & Albert Lomas
(NL) about a "nominal stipend" for the editor & publisher of
the Shaker paper & decide on $10 per month "if there is
sufficient income to allow it; if not, not to tax the fa-
milies in which they reside the per capita tax. "
26 Apr (NL) Chauncey Miller comes about old cabbage seed law suit.
Lawyers suggest settling for $6000. "The question is the
propriety or impropriety of doing so."
9 May Ministry come to Wvlt .
11 May C. Copley & Henry George go to Albany "to try to borrow
money to pay up a mortgage on some real estate in Albany
taken to pay for wood sold to an Albany man from the Sand
Farm two years ago."
12 May Samuel Gould "is trying to get articles of agreement to
(Sun) separate from his wife."
Meetings "are very heavy & disagreeable. There is a great
need of more union in the family; contention concerning
officials . "

19 (Sun) A society singing meeting. "The young sisters of CF seem
to take no interest in it . They will not use the organ at
all & seem miffed, a disgrace to themselves and the family.
A spiritual gift in this family is greatly wanting; too
much gossip about other peoples ' business . "
20 May Ministry talk to brethren about repair of drying kiln;
1) whether to do it, 2) how, & how much.
Giles goes to SF to see Samuel Gould, seems hardly sane.
