15 June Ministry now learns from Elders & many others, that the
(NL) meeting on May 14th with Win. Eddy "for manifestation of
spirits, was in no wise satisfactory, many witnessing to
their senses many things which gave the appearance of
charlatanry. It was a general testimony that the speaking
of the spirit manifestationw was very excellent, but a very
general lack of spiritual feeling; the room was so dark
and the speakers or spirit manifestations so very indistinct
that there was a general unbelief among many that the mani-
festations were other than William Eddy. Others, particu-
larly of the older part, felt quite satisfied...Others of
the older class pronounce the whole thing a farce. On the
whole, perhaps nothing has occurred that has produced more
diversity of feeling and sentiment."

"There is universal distress, in these days, among Believers
on account of the paucity of numbers and a lack of ability
to manage business, or to keep a suitable spiritual gift
for protection, the future prospect of keeping the various
Shaker organizations intact looks very dubious, unless the
work of the Lord calls into Zion very soon a class of souls
largely developed inn spiritual understanding and consider-
ably progressed in a travel out of themselves and into a
Gospel conservation."
