On trip, go to Philadelphia, where they stay with sisters
at 724 Erie St., have two meetings & "make labors with
several individuals."
Go to Cincinnati & Union Village. North or Second Family
has 10 brethren & 10 sisters. West Family has 3 brethren
& 4 sisters.
1 Aprilst go to South Union. "Sorrowful" reports of con-
ditions, "much to do & little time to do it." Break up
Ministry Order there. Arrange for elders & eldresses in
the families. "L ook into the premises occupied by boys;
it is awfully dilapidated, worse than multituks of stables
in the eastern states, very far worse.!"
18 Aprth go to Pleasant Hill. East Family has "a company
of young females, not much Shakery, no young brethren &
only 2 older ones." West Family raising blooded horses,
making boxes for packing tobacco & pale fencing. Church
Family has 100 breeding hogs, 165 pigs, large number of
blooded cattle & sheep; raise hundreds of acres of Indian
corn & wheat; put up preserves for market of peaches, plums,
cherries & small fruits.
2 May. At Whitewater, Ohio. "Finest dairy we -ever saw. "
North Family very much run down, only 1 brother and 4-5
sisters. South Family now rented.
7 May. Go to Watervliet, Ohio. North Family has 2 men,
3 women. "Manage their own temporalities, but meet at CF
for worship on all occasions."
10 May. To Union Village. Arrange for a new ministry
sisters for Union Village & all western Societies.
15 May. Giles goes back to South Union. Petitions gov't
to release Elder Hervey as postmaster. "Talk with numerous
individuals concerning Society conditions; Elder Hervey
is inconsistent and unyielding." Goes back to Union VIg.
22 May. Go to North Union. Meet officials of the Society
"and discuss the question of society's removal to some
other society in the west." Agreed upon.
25 May. Return to Groveland.
29 May. Giles & Harriet return to Wvlt; Eld Anna to NL.
(North Union are to move to Wvlt Ohio & Union Village.)
30 May Engaged in getting home, looking at letters, etc. "trying
to find what can be done to better Society conditions at
Wvlt." At SF, "great complaints of a person."
2 June (Sun) Society meeting. "Not very enliveningg rather heavy.
Divisions & contentinns in society, between a few indivi-
duals spoils the gift."
3 June Have a talk with Henry George about his moving to Lebanon.
12 June Ministry go to Lebanon. Been gone over 3 months.
7 July (Sun)(NL) Public meeting. No exercise, only singing &
speaking.
17 July (NL) Go to NF to ask Elder Frederick if he will take
Henry George into his family. "He declines the gift."
24 July Giles comes to Wvlt to see how his bean cutter works; is
not satisfactory.
