APPENDIX A

A pamphlet printed at East Canterbury, N. H. in 1891, entitled
"How I Came to be a Shaker" by George Wickersham, tells how he came
to visit Lebanon in 1829 to see what it was like when he was 17 years of age
and he stayed until he died aged 32. But his first evening, when they arrived
about seven o'clock, they went first to the Deaconesses' Room. There he
saw some of the Sister "smoking pipes with stems 16 or 18 inches long,
and the room was so filled with smoke that everything looked blue. " He
decided it seemed strange because he had sefen only one woman smoke a
pipe before and that "no more than 3 inches. " But he was grateful that the
day of smoking "has passed away to return no more. "
