6th Tues. the width of the pile leting them stand farther apart at the bottom than the
top so as to give the pile a gradual taper let a board be placed on the ground
for the pile to lieon then commence packing between the boards with the
largest beets firstleting the top or large ones of the beets touch the board at
the side placing alternately a laying of beets and a laying of sand pressing
each laying of sand with the hand until the pile is made as high as you wish to
have it then take away the boards and the sides of the pile will be strait and
smooth the roots being covered with sand to the ends
7th Wed, Counted the old seeds returned from the Canaan Route No, of papers 12107
Put the large Early York Cabbage in the East side of the cellar and the Drumhead
Cabbage on the west side before packing see Nov, 9th to find where itis packed
8th Thurs. Levi V. Henry returned from their Southern Seed Journey. Finished packing
roots in the Deacon Shop cellar and commenced packing cabbages in Brickshop
cellar.
9th Fri Finished packing cabbage in the brick shop cellar as follows: Put the Large
Early York in the SouthEast part two tier of Drumhead in the NorthEast part
packed the Green Savoy and Red Dutch West of the Drumhead and a small
pile of Bullocks heart South of the Drumhead
We packed the Cabbage this year in the following manner: We first placed 3
boards or slabs on blocks so as to raise the bottom of the pile 5 or 6 inches from
the ground the 3 boards were placed side by side on the blocks we then com-
menced packing the cabbage on the boards leting the roots lie on the middle
board and the heads on the outer board the heads being larger than the roots
as we placed one laying top of another the outside of the pile would of course
rise the fastest laying about 2 courses of cabbage cover the roots with sand
pressing itdown with the hand Then after laying a block at each end and one
on the middle of the pile place a board on the blocks so as to make the middle
of the pile as high as the outsides then pack again laying the roots of the
cabbage on the board or slab and so on until the pile is 2 or 2 1/2 feet high

13th Tues, Washed some Extra Long Cucumber seeds Put up some seeds for the Harford
Route
14th Wed Finished boxing up the Harford Route pasted on the bills etc. Washing Extra L
cucumbers Yesterday T. Rayson went to Philadelphia to his father's funeral
Two hands washed out and took care of 4 hhds of cucumber seeds,, beginning
at 8 1/2 oc to 4; at the rate of 1 hhd every 2 hrs, not having room to spread
the seed, some of it was left in barrels till the nextday.
