27th Sat. The little walk. West of the sage bed, having been ploughed up last fall, it
was thought best to move the Parsley which stood next to it. We set out 16 rows
of Parsnips (3 1/2 ft. apart & 3 ft. in the rows) next to the yellow onions; then,
the parsley broken into clumps, 2 rows 3 1/2 ft. apart & 2 ft. in the rows. Some
furrows were made for Black Winter Radish & we set out part of 2 rows but stopped
for want of time. The BWR which was thrown into barrelslast fallkept as well
as generally, but at least 1/2 rotted away. Some ploughing was done North of
pear trees. Farmers still working at manure.

29th Mon. Rainy. The following kinds of seed have been put up to date, viz.
Early Cucumbers 11,600 Summer Seal. Squash 1900
Extra Long do 6900 do Crookneck do 600
Rutabaga 1600 Sweet Potato do _ 500
Watermelon 500

visited with us today. Farmers still at manure. Some of our hands helped to dig
50 apple trees from the nursery. A 2nd size box of seeds put up for a peddler.
30th Tues. Some hands digging in the nursery. Bro. Frederic went to Pittsfield with some
trees. Finished setting out 2 rows BW Radish ( 3 1/2 ft.apart, by 8 inches in
the rows). Picked over the Celery roots which have nearly all rotted away.
They were packed away last fall with all the dirt on them, as they were dug
up; perhaps this was wrong. Commenced setting out Whjte onions. 2 farm
teams helping us plough.
May
1st Wed. Finished setting out 10 1/2 rows white onions in the South Garden/ South side/
leaving about 12 ft, space for turning. Set out 18 1/2 rows red onions in the
North Garden East of the middle walk. Began setting out flatfield turnips
in the West Garden on the east side. Ploughing 13 hands in the garden today.
2nd Thur. Finished setting out 30 rows of Turnips. Raked and sowed for 10 rows yellow
onions, 18 red, 10 white; 10 Early Curled Lettuce, 6 Carrots, 4 Parsnips,
4 Long Blood Beet, 2 Yellow Sugar Beets/ 2 White Sugar Beet, Eastward
beginning at the hawthorn hedge. 9 rakers employed. Farmers planting potatoes.
We began to spade the sage bed. This morning the thermometer was about
freezing and the wind (from the north) quite raw.
3rd Friday Ploughing & harrowing. In the North Garden (beginning on the west side by the
wall) we set out 17 1/3 rows of Carrots, rows 3 1/2 ft. apart & 3 ft. m the row;
and 4/5 of a row of Celery from 8 in. to 1 foot apart. East of the red onions,
3 rows of Rutabagas (3 1/2 x 2). In the lot Garden, beginning east from the
beets, sowed 2 rows Scarcity Beet, 2 Spinage, 2 Summer Savory & 1 Celery.
& 16 Short Top Radish. The general distance is 14 inches except the Lettuce
& Radish, 18 inches. Farmers planting potatoes in the lot north of theNorth
Garden; 1st time ithas ever been cultivated. Some of the Sisters arepainting
