23rd (cent.) papers seeds this spring & Doolittle 1 paper. Finished planting E C Cucumbers,
of an acre took 3 Ibs, 10 oz. of seed. We began to draw & furrow the sand
knoll piece, but were driven off by rain, P.M., dug up the quack from the
walk in South Garden.
24th A.M. Still quacking; towards noon 2 hands went down to the sand knoll for
the wagon, which being loaded with manure, we made some furrows & dropped
the manure. Some work done in the shop. P.M. drew sheep manure to the
compost heap. Farmers finished sowing what. Stillcloudy & wet.
25th Finished planting Long Green Cucumber on the sand knoll patch. Middling
fair day.
26th SABBATHDAY. AM, at meeting house. PM: shuffling (etc.) study and
reading meeting. Rain & thunderstorm,
27th Worked some in the shop; then went to drawing dirt etc. from the saw mill to
the compost heap. In the morning itrained very hard accompanied with
thunder & lightning.
28th Drawing dirt A.M. P.M. ploughed & hoed the white onions South Garden.
Farmers to Canaan mending fences. Warmest day this spring.
29th Cultivated & hoed the turnips 1st Garden and planted every row with Early
Cucumber. Cultivated & hoed the carrots & cabbages jn the North Garden &
planted Early cucumbers in each row of the latter. Also cultivated the
rutabagas. Cold & windy morning, cloudy day.
30th Considerable rain last night; drawing manure and dirt to the compost heap.
Cultivated and hoed the onions, rutabagas and beets in the North Garden; also
some ploughing done, Apple trees are coming out in fullbloom,
31st Rainy morning; spread manure on the west part of the 2nd lot north of the North
Garden, which was also ploughed. PM drew off stones from the hog pasture.
Rainy afternoon -worked in the shop. An English family of 11 arrive from near
Philadelphia.
June
1st Fence mending & choring. Ground too wet to work.
2nd SABBATH DAY. Meetings at Meeting House & home.
3rd In the 2nd lot north of the North Garden, planted 6 rows China Beans & 4 rows
S. Scallop Squash. Shuffling small plants. In the North Garden east wall
4 rows Sr. Crookneck Squash.
4th 3/4 Ib. carrot seed to Br.Wright. Planted in the old hog lot, beginning west,
13 rows Drumhead Cabbage (about 70 hill) 2 ft.apart) to a row). 2nd lot north,
ploughed & raked, and sowed 6 rows rutabagas and planted 4 rows Red Dutch
(about 194 hills in a row). Sowed some Frame Peas in drills (about 1/2 acre).
