27 October, 1831 "An unfortunate woman from Chatauqua comes. She had the
misfortune to be born, to be married, to have 8 children. She has lost her husband
and children all but one. She is 34 years old." October 28 - She leaves.
3 November, 1831 - "A miserable woman and young one from from Manlius,
leaving her drunken husband behind. Name Mapes." November 8 - Mapes woman leaves.

While the leaders of the family had to deal with all these comings and goings,
professions of faith and backslidings, the business of the family continued ?&K'd-e-e
In 1836 they bought land in the Town of Rotterdam - 10 acres of river flats and
about 13 more acres; in 1840 they bought 9 more acres but soldthem in 1842; but
in 1844 they bought 8 acres next to their Rotterdam property and leased another
40 acres for 5 years to raise broom corn on. In 1846 they bought a 69 acre farm
from Mifch^ael Damp for $40 per acre; in 1851 they bought the "Powell farm", 3
miles SE of Schenectady for $4300 from Samuel Baker; in 1854 102 acres 3 miles
from the Niskayuna depot along the railroad, for $2300 from Vroman and White;
in 1855, 32 acres adjoining their north farm in Niskayuna for $1102 from the Van
Vrankens; in 1856, 9 acres in Rotterdam adjoining their other farm for $175 per
acre (paid for out of the sisters' earnings).
In 1857 it was noted that during the year they had "dug more than 1 3/4
miles of ditch, mostly on the west part of our farm, bogged several acres and
scraped down several sand knolls and clearaed several acres of lowland."
During 1861 and 1862 they rented their west farm on halves to David Ogsbury
and their north farm on halves to James and David Pier; in 1862 built a drying
house 77 ft. long at Rotterdam for their broom corn and received $1100 from the
Canal Commissioners for damage to their Rotterdam farm. In 1864 they sold 100
acres of their west farm with all buildings for $6000, but bought 31 acres of
woodland 4 miles from their Rotterdam farm for $1100. In 1865 they sold 15 acres
of their west farm for $777.50 and bought a 3 acre addition to their Rotterdam
farm for $535 and half of a house in Troy for $1300. In 1866 they bought 20 acres
