to Watervliet and they refused to have her. She demanded $200 per month from when
she came to the Shakers at age 9. (She was then 53 years old.) Shakers flatly
refused.
On August 7th the Watervliet SF was warned to keep their doors locked because
if Maggie got back into heijroom, they couldn't evict her. So they did this, and
planned that, if anyone saw her coming, the bell (on the top of the dwelling) was
to be tapped to warn others. On August 9th, Maggie was brought in a car about 7 pm
and depositedwith her suitcases. Anna tapped the bell and all came. Eldress Anna
and some others were outside and toldher she couldn't come in. Maggie "got on her
knees and pleaded." Finally she said she wouldaccepna home at Lebanon. Her lawyer
had advised her thepovenant she signed could not be broken and she had better take
thelhome that was offered as she could get no money. She stayed overnight with the
Strobels and was taken into Albany the next day.
On August 12the the sisters packed upher things in several trunks and boxes
and found they consisted of 12 Shaker bonnets, 25 dresses, 24 paairs of new hose,
lOpairs of good shoes, 50 new kerchiefs and 5 pairs of new underwear besidesother
things.
On October 25, 1921, Elder Josiah Barkerjpf the CF died. The Ministry wanted
Hugo Strobel tqtakej^harge ofjthe hired hands at the CF, as well as continuing at the
SF, but thamessage was brought tojthe SF that Eldress Mary Nelson, Libby DeLongknd
JuliatlcNally wouldpun theirpwn place (the CF) and wanted the SF to mind their own
business. Eldress Anna said o.k., they wouojlj wait until the Ministry came again.
On November23d the Ministry returned, and agreed to let the CF run their own
affairs but Eldress Anna and Eldress Caroline were to)^ontinue|as Trustees of both
families.
In June 1922, Ella Winship went toJLebanon to be an Eldress in the Ministry,
leaving Eldress Anna without a good helper.
