were being sought. These three sisters apparently did not get along with Eldress
Mary and her two cohorts and felt they would be better taken careof atthe SF.
Eldress Mary died sometime in 1923, also.
Sister Lucy Bowers kept her own personal diary in books she purchased from
Wanamaker' s in Philadelphia and the Shaker Heritage Society has been fortunate
enough to be given those for the years of 1919, 1922, 1923, 1924, 1925 and 1929
and these are are only source of information about those years in the SF.
She documents the final saleof the NF property in April 1922,concluded by
Elder Walter Shepherd, Eldress Anna and Eldress Caroline.. On January 5, 1923,
the two Eldresses went to the CF tojtalwto them about selling the property. On
29 January, she says "No sign of a sale because all the sisters pull apart." On
4 Februaryth, the CF accounts are "figured up" and for the previous year their
expenses had been nearly $15,000 and their income $2000. There are more conferences
about the saleof the CF and then on April 10th, "sale of CF propertyjgone flat."
But on April 26th, "six men in a limousine come to look over CF property."
Pn Sept./ 30th, Eldress Anna, Eldress Caroline, Jennie Wells and Lucy go to
Green Island and visit the new Ford automobile plant. "It is a wonderful sight of
engineering skill."
In October they begin to make preparations for the three sisters to move over
plastering, papering, etc. at "the other house"
from the CF, making repairs, bringing over Barbara's young chickens, moving furni-
ture, setting up stoves, etc. At the same time they moved Ella's things, "organ
and all," to Mt. Lebanon. On October 31, "two truckloads of CF furniture were
moved over for Barbara and Abbie by Hugo.
On Thanksgiving that year they had a "sumptuous dinner of turkye, mashed
potatoes, sweet potatoes, raw cabbage, cranberry sauce,pumpkin pie."
In January 1924, they received maps of a survey of the CF property, done at
a cost of $800. In March, Elder Walter sells CF farm tools and horses for $800
to Peets and Constantine. On April 10th, Peets & Constantine have an auction at
the CF, Ireland & Son, auctioneers.
