On April 14th, Anna Goepper and Grace Dahm went to Albany for the day and saw
the movie "Hunchback of Notre Dame" at the Strand. On April 16th, the SF bought a
new tractor, disc harrow and ploughs. On May 1st, they received their first radio
set, and they heard from stations in NYC and Pittsburgh. On June 14th, Elder Walter
came to get Eldress Caroline's signature to the final payment of the Enfield pro-
perty, "originally $100,000 but increased greatly by the payment of interest from
1914 to 1924." On September 20th, they purchased an automobile--SF paid $800,
CF $200, Enfield folk $500, Strobels $700 = $2200. On November 4, she records that
Elder Walter had visited the CF "to no avail."
In 1925, on February 13th, she notes "More crystal sets installed. We now have
nine on this farm." On February 6th she records "teacher has a terrible fracas with
the boy Henry Schenk. Pummels him in the snow." This coincides with an episode
mentioned in Martha Hillings' book "Shaker Days Remembered."
Lucy's diaries for the years 1926, 1927 and 1928 unfortunately have not come
to light yet. These would have recorded the actual sale of the CF property and the
brouhaha created by the three sisters still living there.
On January 11, 1929, she notes that she and Freida Sipple went over to the
Shaker Farm (Church Family, owned by Albany County now) and'Vere escorted all over
the building, it surely is elegant." (This probably was the former Office, now called
the Preventerium by the County.) On Frebruary 8, "men and boys from Preventorium for
candy. Invite us to the picture show when the machine is bought and placed." On
12 Februaryth, "party of six Sisters gcbver to the CF farm to see moving pictures
at 7:15, home at 10:30. Freida and I walk to the airport. It was very cold, saw
the new hanger now building."
