14 Mar Eldress Annie, Hugo, George, Grace & Mary, Marie, Lillian, Viola, Catherine, Ella,
Susan, Eleanor, Marian and Helen went to Mrs. Charles Orlop's about 2 p.m. ard returned
at 11 p.m. Had fine time - games, piano music and good supper. Had mashed potatoes,
porterhouse steak, gravy, cabbage salad, jello, nuts, oranges, bananas, ice cream, raised
biscuits, cheese, graham bread, lemon layer cake, nut cake, tea & coffee. Home in a
blizzard.
Eldress Anna went to power house twice on stormy days to meet some children who were
coming to live at NF and children did not come.
20 Mar Children finally came. They are from Arlington, Vt., given to Shakers by a Mr. Phelps.
They are Nina Cadoret, aged 9, and Louise Cadoret, aged 12. Taken to NF.
22 Mar Sleighride partyof 11 people from Niskayuna arrived at 10:30 a.m. (Mamie Sheffer,
Marcia Robinson, Anna Onderdonk, Mrs. Johnson, Mrs. Chas. Orlop, Mrs. Harry Tribley,
Olive Orlop, Edith Van Houten, Milton Van Houten, Mabel Russell and Mildred Russell.
They brought with them a pan full of cookies and 6 large pies - 1 apple, 1 chocolate,
2 cherry and 2 red raspberry, besides pickles, fancy crackers and candy forchildren.
Shakers gave them dinner of roast veal, veal cutlet, celery, peas, lima beans, creamed
potatoes, cranberry sauce, beets, sweet pepper relish, marble cake, cookies shaped like
teddy bears and birds (made by A.G. and taken home as souvenirs), and vanilla ice cream
with chocolate sauce. They went to store and bought some things, had singing and piano
music. They paid for their dinners also, so Eldress Anna took in $19 In all,
23 Mar Freida, Grace and Helen went to Albany and saw "Birth of a Nation. " Their tongues
ran like bell clappers from the time they got home a little after 6 pm until 10 pm, telling
of their great time and the wonderful moving picture. Hugo in the family sleigh took
George, Miss Leary, Julia, Victoria, Julia's sisterEllen Sheirer and our Eleanor Brooks
about 7p.m. to see the same thing and they got home at 1:15 a.m.
24 Mar Eldress Annie took Susan and Pauline to Albany and, afterPauline had a tooth pulled, they
went to movies also. Eldress Anna gavefallthe rest afthe family the chance to go if
they wanted to.
26 Mar Lillian (Cross) fell on the flooryesterday in a fitin Maggie's room. "I stillsay the child
is an epileptic and it were far better had they all been sent back right at the startfor
they are nothing extra." Gertrude is sick in bed, have Dr. to see her and also Ella Myer
who is very sick.
27 Mar Dr. Lothridgej^honed for this evening to come immediately as Ella was very bad. Eldress
Anna worked over her an hour or more and she and Maggie stayed all night with her.
"It seems we no sooner get one person placed in the ground till another is on the way."
29 Mar Some signs of spring - can have windows open and do without a fire, grass begins to peep
through and birds begin to chirp and sing.
30 Mar Ella slowly improving. Her nourishment consists of raw eggs, beef and clam broth.
1 Apr James Brownell dismissed. Reported to Hugo by Herbert Hall of committing a criminal
act wi th one of the cows.
2 Apr A Mr. Banker of Gloversville, nephew of deceased Philip Smith, sent Elder Josiah a large
box of grapefruit from Florida and he sent half to the SF.
Ends this book. During the past year (since April 5, 1915) had meeting 16 Sundays, no meeting 36.
Out of 5 gal. of lard she made 670 doughnuts or 10 meals for family and hired hands, at 2 each
and often 3 each.
