20 Apr ^fedress Anna bought from J. B. Hoag, nurseryman in Troy, 4 Astrakan, 4 Gravenstein,
4 Fall Pippin, 4 Duchess of Old(enburg) and 2 Wolf River apple trees.
22 Apr Telephone call from Ella Winship at NF. Office chimney on fire and Elmer, the foreman,
was away. Eldress Anna sent two hired men but itwas out before they got there.
Hugo brought home tombstones for Elder Isaac, Polly Lee and Florence Bourne,'lettering
alone cost $10."
23 Apr Exchanged Easter postcards. Had two eggs each for breakfast, dinner and supper and 2 o
Easter oranges each. Elder Josiah gave them two Easter records which they played on the
Victrola white eating dinner.
25 Apr A.G. made bread, pie and sifted a barrelof flour in the a.m.
29 Apr A.G. comes out of bakeroom after 21 weeks.
"Essie Relyea, a young woman at the NF, 19 years of age, has left the Shakers to live
with her sister. They are in bad shape up there, so many aged and badly afflicted.
Esther Scott nearly dead with a cancer on her breast and so short of help up there."
Mrs. Hulth brought a man who took movies of Shakers going to Meeting House in old
fashioned Shaker style, had some riding in ox cart. Hugo, Albert and James Tribley
were dressed as old style Shakers with broad brimmed hats. They were tlaken all together
in a group on the steps. No one from
Hugo took him in auto to West Albany.
Li!He fell in one of her epileptic fits and hither eye on bed.
Discovered Florence Bourne's tombstone misspelled - "Bourm" instead of "Bourne."
7 May Hamilton visits as usual, as does Elder Josiah. "They are in bad shape over at the NF
Sun. for help. Esther Scott is very low with cancer of the breast, Isabelle White is quitefeeble,
Lavinia Dutcher very frail, Elnora DeGraw an invalid now for over three years, Jennie
Wells doctors all the time, and Hattie Coburn is almost an idiot and has to be looked after
all the time. As Esther has always looked after her and is no longer able to, they talked
of placing her in some institutionfor the feeble minded. They need help very badly but
haven't the means to hire it done and each family needs all their own help."
8 May Took Lillie to her mother in Arlington, Vt. as she is having 3-4 fits a day and "they felt
ir bestto get rid of her as itwas affecting her mentally and physically."
10 May Planted horse chestnut tree by pump and two catalpa trees, on e each side of entrance
into yard from lane.
Ozias splitting firewood every day - has a great pile. (Was 74 yrs. old.)
13 May A.G. took Barbara Hooper at CF asparagus, 12 Northern Spy apples, loaf of bread and a
cake fl
20 May Set out 75 poplar trees (Lombardy) on both sides of lane.
21 May Hamilton's face and eye all black - had fight with foreman's cousin. NF had intended to
Sun fire this man anyway Sat. Night and Elmer, the foreman, told his cousin to give Hamilton
"a damn good thrashing" before he left. (Hamilton was 63, according to 1915 Census,
the foreman, Elmer Kellam was 22 and his cou^sin about 20.) Hamilton knocked the fellow
down and bloodied his nose. A.G. says "he didn't get half enough Js the trouble ... A
furous mess up there. I have no more to say."
25 Mayi Marie (Mayer) has had cast on her leg for weeks. Is upstairsin her room, has to have meals
taken to her, uses a commode which has to be brought downstairs and emptied every day.
Finally this day Dr. Hackea^comes to take cast off. "Itis generally thought she will never
amount to much. One leg is a good two inches shorter and she complains of her hip
paining all the time." (A few weeks later, Marie was better, however.)
