17 Aug. Eldress Anna and Elder Josiah to West Albany - as trustees sold one of the SF
Shaker houses for $4500.
19 Aug Sherman, seed man, refunded $14 for wrong seed but it was about a 300 doz. can
loss to SF.
22 Aug Have been having long heat spell. Today 94 at 3 p.m. Eldress Anna, Helen,
Susan and George clean room over the washhouse and put up clean beds and
bedding for the hired hands - to move up there for a month or so. Eldress Anna
expects to have men's rooms replastered, old paper torn off and walls painted,
new floor put down in both rooms. It has been utterly impossible to keep the
bedbugs cleared out so now she will try a new plan.
26 Aug "We had a great shock just at noon. Ozias failed to come to dinner so Ella
Myer started over to the Sisters1 Shop to see him. I sat in the swing under
the pine trees in the yard, the family were eating dinner. In a few minutes
Ella appeared at the door and called 'Oh, Anna, come quick, I believe Ozias is
dead." Ozias lay on floor, had only his pants on, had been changing his clothes
getting ready for a visit from Dr. Lothridge. He had complained of not feeling
well in the morning although he had split quite a pile of wood after breakfast
and the doctor had been sent for at 10 a.m. Eld. A notified his family.
27 Aug Ozias1 daughter, Hattie Blanchard, arrived from Glens Falls.
28 Aug Funeral. His nieces, Mrs. Elizabeth Lewis and husband Charles, Mrs. Minnie
Keeler and husband John, came. Floral piece from SF of white lilies and palms.
Everyone spoke including AG who read a poem, young people had something to say.
As casket carried out, they sang "Bear me away, bear me away, peaceful spirits,
to your home."
29 Aug Funeral of young John Schairer who dropped dead of heart attack. His father
died only a few months ago. Funeral at Niskayuna Church. ^ly^^L }
30 Aug. Susanna Rooney, a sister from Whitewater, Ohio, almost 80, came to live at
CF as that community has disbanded.
I Sept Eldress Anna and Elder Josiah to Albany to hire a cook for CF Office.
3 Sept Eldress Anna goes into cook room, Helen to help her.
4"Sept Eldress Anna had broiled steak, creamed string beans, potatoes, tomato bisque
Labor Day & rice pudding for dinner. "We are living high for Eldress Anna is a No. 1
fine cook."
6 Sept Eldress Anna has ordered 30 tons of coal at $7.50 per ton - $210.
9 Sept Mr. & Mrs. Storey to rent WF for their church interests for $25 a month.
10 Sept Mary started a 7 p.m. Sabbath & Wednesday Christian Endeavor meeting for the
Sun. young people especially, but anyone can go.
Mary took in $12 at store and has $12 order for canned goods. Yesterday
Maggie had 10 auto parties at store in afternoon and took in $20.
II Sept. A Shaker brother from Florida arrived for a short visit - Benjjflamin DeRoo.
Has lived in Florida community for 4 years. "Looks to be what is called a
hunchback or his spine has been injured. Seems to be a very nice person."
19 Sept Eldress Caroline Tate of Enfield, Conn, arrives for a visit.
1 Oct. G. E. Ebmons, Supt. of General Electric Co. in Schdy, visited.
4 Oct Frank Dahm and his wife Frances came in their car from Rensselaer and took
Wed. their cousins, Mary and Grace, and Anna Goepper on a trip to Lake George.
Left at 9 a.m., went through Latham, Cohoes, Waterford, Mechanicville, Round
Lake,Saratoga, Greenfield Center, Lake Luzerne, Corinth, So.Corinth and Lake
George Village to Bolton where they had their dinner on a huge rock at the
steamboat landing. Gathered chestnuts for 1% hours, rested, then started home.
Traveled 164 miles, got home 8 p.m.
While they were gone, some ladies came to the store in an auto with chauffeur
and the car took fire from a leak in the tank with 20 gal. gas in it.
Expected an explosion but it burned itself out. New Cadillac cost $3000, in-
sured for $2000. Black smoke and flames could be seen for great distance so
drew a great crowd. Their men in the fields and at CF all came running, think-
ing buildings were on fire. Trijfed to save car but could not. "They said
Albert (Stroebel) eyes stuck out like two fried eggs, so far you could hang
your hat on them." Hugo took the ladies home in his auto and brought back
