13 Jan Everyone has colds, Deborah has pneumonia. Deborah, Ella & Joanna in bed, Eldress Anna
& Mary looking after them, girls carry meals upstairs. "I sit up allnight with Deborah.
I think this Is her last
illness."
14 Jan Eldress Anna & Mary washed, dressed and changed Deborah's clothes, put on clean bedding
and cleaned her room. Mary and Freida sat all night with her.
15 Jan Sister Harriet Jones of CF spent day with Deborah.
16 Jan Grace and AG sat with Deborah.
17 Jan Mary and Freida sat with DEborah. Got RN to care for Deborah at $15 per week. Her
name, Louella DeGraff.
19 Jan Pauline Bruce's sister, Martha McKinney, visits. Lived at SF for severalyears as a girl.
23 Jan Eldress Anna takes girl, Ruth Henrietta Porter, 7 years old, to live. Brought by her grand-
mother from Granfield, Conn.
Maggie's birthday, Eldress Anna takes her flowers from Dankers, florists in Albany, and
Freida take candy.
26 Jan Water very low in fountai n, almost none to use.
28 Jan Have to use water from well for everything, can't use bathrooms.
2 Feb Hugo went to bring Maggie home from hospital. (There since Jan. 2- cost $69). "Her
diet prescribed by Dr. Stillman is to be -toast all the time, egg for breakfast, eggnog for
a.m. and p.m., lamb stewed, fried or anyway, bouillon cubes made into hot drink for
supper."
3 Feb -8 . Men working at water pipes nearly frozen and unsuccessful. Water carried from pump*
4 Feb Men and Hugo worked on pipes again.
7 Feb Still work! ng on pipes every day and Fred Tribley from CF helps also. Itseems the pipes
are rusted and gone to decay.
8 Feb Deborah dressed, sat up 5 hours and knit some. The nurse and school teacher, Mary and
Grace, go coasting with the girls several times.
9 Feb Water getting low in well; melting snow to bathe in and do our work in. Men draw water
from pond in a barrel on a sled for the horses and cattle.
11 Feb Hugo and George coaxed Elder Josiah to letthem have some pipe they have had at the CF
for over 10 years thatsome man left there. At firsthe did not think itbest but finally
consented to letthem have enough to help out until spring.
Little Sarah Wilsky, aged 11, who lives near Powell's Hotel, walkd over to see Eldress
Anna and the girls. Her grandmother had placed her at the Shakers twice but her mother
took her away and made so much trouble they had to letthe child go. "She would love
to live here. Her mother is very poor, with two other children and Sarah, poor child,
looks as if she were halfclad. "
12 Feb We miss the bathroom very badly, have to go away down in the yard. -10
Grace has been spending a.m. with Deborah to give nurse a rest butnow has gone back
to weaving In her shop. Nurse has crocheted for Eldrees Anna the ends of 2 doz. bath
towels and wash clothes for the store.
Eldress Anna has made and Is making sweaters all the time for sale, very difficult ones, with
fine white yarn and fancy figures knit in, besides all her other burdenrs.
Mary Dahm, besides the cooking, does a great deal of finefancy crocheting for babies such
as sacques, bootees, and also heavy and very handsome afghans. She has just made or
molded 196 waxes for work boxes, fancy waxes from beeswax. Itis a very tedious and par-
ticular job. Freida knits all sizes and colors of mittens; Maggie crochefs and knits slippers;
Susan Is knitting sweaters.
13 Feb Water finally turned on In hour lateIn evening.
14 Feb Pauline and Mary had Valentine party for the children over at the shop. Nurse left. Cost $60
