15 Feb Sleigh ride party of 16 married ladies from Niskayuna came for dinner and
to spend the day. Pay 500 each and bought a few things in store. Had
chicken, dumplings, gravy, peas, mashed potatoes, pickled cauliflower, pepper
relish, jelly, cheese, fresh bread, donuts, pear pie. Party included Mame
Sheffer, Mrs. Robinson, Mrs. Russell (Mabel Orlop), Belle Orlop, Mrs. Manning
Mrs. Van Houten (Edith Orlop), Olive Tribley, Cora Orlop, Nellie Orlop, old '
Mrs. Orlop, Had music, coasting down hill, some dancing.

17 Feb Sarah (T^and her brother (5) here with an old plug of a horse and delapidated
wagon begging for bedclothes to keep them warm. So Eldress Anna gave them
some and clothes too and they left after dinner.
20 Feb Lawyer Van Voast came to see Elder Josiah and Eldress Anna. 'Van Voast had
just returned from Florida Shakers. The property has come back into the hands
of the Shakers as theoman expecting to buy it could not live up to his promises."
24 Feb Elder Josiah brought SF a basket of 15 very fine grapefruit. A friend had sent
him from Florida. He divided with us; a very just, unselfish brother. Also
gave Stroebels two.
1 March Eldress Anna got letter from Miss Storey giving up entirely the idea of buying
the WF. "She is in debt now, thinks it best to quit before becoming more
heavily involved. So far all have failed to buy."
2 March Eldress Anna lists WF with Blanchfield, Albany real estate dealer. Lillian
Barlow visiting from Mt. Lebanon.
At SF in a year, make 1825 pies at the rate of 35 per week, and 1309 loaves of
bread, besides cake every week, rolls, biscuits, gingerbread. "So I guess I
earn my salt. I have never had a girl to help me, I do my own work. Still I
am not nearly so smart as some of the sisters. Eldress Anna and one or two
others can beat me all hollow. I never could do 30 or 40 or even 4 or 5 things
all at once. It confuses me greatly."
4 March Elder Josiah and Hamilton not here today "Elder Josiah quite miserable all
week and he has so much burden. Kellams t the NF leaving in April and it is
expected the foreman has left plenty of < t behind. Then May Winegarden-Miller's
suit comes up again. That is not settle yet. .. Elder Anna says she is willing
to settle with May at the rate of $20 for 9 months of her services to Eldress
Rachel, $180 in all. But this does not seem to satisfy her. When the Shakers
took her in, a poor little girl and raised her up. She was in a very bad
plight when they took her in, a forlorn little object. How sharper than a
serpent's tooth is an ungrateful child.1"
5 March "Mary, Grace and Helen have an awful time to rid rats from the kitchen. They
have gnawed doors, drawers and played 'old hob1 generally." No poison or trap
has worked^et. "These rats have had a college eduction. '
12 March Made bi^rtnday cake for Eldress Anna for tomorrow. Four 3-layer cakes, two
fresh grated coconuts in cake, hickory nut filling and % hickory nuts on top.
Grace makes Deborah's bed, combs her hair, empties her vessel, cleans the
room, makes her fire and bathes her. Deborah gets around, eats well and does
not seem to care to wait on herself. Dr. says her heart is weak.
13 March Eldress Anna's birthday - 62 years old. Had broiled tenderloin, mashed pota-
toes, cake and ice cream. Elder Josiah here for day, brought two new records.
Ida Otto, governess for Dedricks, brought by chauffeur with large bunch of
white double hyacinths and daffodils.
19 March Ejfldress Anna and Mary making new dresses for the girls over in sisters' shop.
Eldress Anna is not a bit well but keeps on working just the same.
22 Mar Mary giving girls music lessons; each practices one hour each day in afternoon.
3 April Mary, Freida, Grace, Eldress Anna, Susan and Ella Winship knitting sweaters
for Jordan Mareh & Co. in Boston. Nine skeins to a sweater, bright colors
with fancy collars, cuffs of angora and sash with angora balls at end. Yarn
very fine. They will pay $5 each. Grace, Helen and I and two others knit the
sashes, I also do the collars and cuffs.
