Notes from Anna Goepper's Journals of Watervl iet South Family, Volume 3^ 1917-1918

5 April "We have finally got into a state of war withGermany. Oh! how deplorable!"
1917 Breakfast: maple flake, eggs, bacon, doughnuts, fried potatoes, pear sauce
Dinner: fried sausage, fried onions, boiled potatoes, pickled cauliflower, applesauce,
fresh apple pie/ bread, tea, coffee and mi$k.

Easter Meeting. All go but Joanna and Deborah, 18 of us in all.
8 April P.M. "Eliza Mclntosh that has lived over by the powerhouse for years, a rough
character and drinking woman, landed at the back door with all she owned in a paper
bundle. I let her come In,not knowing who she was. She insisted on staying, saying
she had come to stay so I went for Eld. Anna who soon recognized who she was. She
settled of|(sJp) with her shortly so I gave her something to eat and Eld. Anna gave her
25 cts. and she went on rather reluctantly. She was determined to stay, seemed to think
the Shakers ought to would say "what ju goin to do, when you can't do nothin" till I wanted to scream with
laughter. We finally
got her started. She had no use for the fare served at the Albany
Alms House."

14 April "A terribleloss discovered at our store." $200 worth stolen sometime in thenight --
8 handknit sweaters, all the lined silkbags, stack of washcloths, knitted wide scarfs,
narrow scarfs, baby afghans. Suspect previous day's visitors--2 couples who came
with "Albert." One couple "keeps a road house justbelow Dr. Lothridge."

22 April Freida'sdnner day. Mary and Pauline out of bakeroom, I (Anna G.) go in. Susan &
Marie out of cookroom. Eld, Anna, Ella & Helen go in. Marion out of dining room,
Pauline in.

24 April Made 9 loaves of bread, 10 apple pies.

25 April Eld. Anna & Mary to Rensselaer to get some girls Frank Dahm tpught would be acceptable.
Eld, Anna did not care to take the girls.

26 April "I walked up to the church (family) with a little butter and cream for Barbara. They are
so bad off for milk justnow."

14 May Got new "auto truck" cost $1300. Has 'South Family Shakers' in gold letters painted on it

15 May "Eld. Josiah and Eld. Anna went (to Mt. Lebanon) to see Elder Joseph, Elder Walter
and ministry sisters Catherine Allen and Sarah Berger In society business and the broken
down and bankrupt condition the foreman, Elmer Kellam, left them in at North Family.
Stole and broke everything he could lay his hands on."

Continues to note almost every week a trip to the Church Family to take Barbara
various treats--butter, asparagus, cream, strawberries, etc,

24 May Elder Walter Shepherd of Enfield, Conn., Eld. Catherine Allen & Eld. Sarah Berger
come in car from Hancock to see about giving financial aid to North Family.

26 May This lastweek 1 made 35 pies, 113 doughnuts and 33 loaves of bread, and 3 meals cake.
Sat. Have finished knitting angora collars & cuffs on 9 woolen sweaters.
