                        over at the SistersShop across the dooryard, and the   North Family property   is forsale

                        in order to pay up Elder Josiah's debts at VChurch which   he had to run into in order to keep

                        the North going.   This is why_they broke  up -  highcost ofliving, paying  so many  hired
<br>
                        hands and the foreman $75 a month and he doing     nothing but  run about in his auto and
<br>
                        taking the North  Family's help to his own farm to  keep his own farm in  fine shape.  A
<br>
                        pretty kettle of fish,I say,"
<br>
                        Mary sick  in bed. Dr.  Lothridge and the surgeon,  Dr.  Stanton, come to see her.   Eld.
<br>
                        Caroline  is carying forher.
<br>

<b>10 Aug.</b>     Dr.  Kelley, Mrs.  Kelley  & autoload of friends here after supper, Dr.  Kelleytosee
<br>
            Sun.        Lucy's dog.   Expects to operate upon it - she is fullof some kind  of nasty sores or tumors.
<br>
                        If she does not get better soon, will chloroform because  Dr.  K. does not think good for
<br>
                        health to have her around.    Debprah's leg is now about  healed up - one of  most marvelous
<br>
                        things 1 ever heard of .  "So much for  Dr. Lothridge's good care."
<br>

<b>12  Aug</b>     Our  beans done for this year.
<br>

<b>14  Aug</b>     Mary started with  12 turkey chicks in spring, has only 4 left, rest died one at a time.
<br>

<b>20 Aug</b>     Beans at ChF finished for  year.  Dr. Lothridge to see Anna  because of dizzy   spells,
<br>
                       vertigo and 'all gone1 feeling.   Given tablets.
<br>

<b>22 Aug</b>      Eld Anna,  Lucy, Susan   & Marion to  North  Family to help look over and pack   some  of
<br>
                        their things to get ready to move.
<br>
                        Hugo  drew  fertil izer and 2 loads of furniture from
<br>
                                                                            North Family  to SF.
<br>
                        Grace wove 4 rugs today,    each 1  1/2 yards long.  Men  dug 25 bu.  potatoes for sale.
<br>

<b>23  Aug</b>     Eld Anna  and girlsclearing  out 'gown shop."   Men dug 20 bu.   potatoes.
<br>

<b>25 Aug</b>     Received 8 boxes finest  & choicest chocolate  from  Elder Arthur Bruce.   Eld. Anna
<br>
                       divided among whole family.     There were 19 airplanes flew  from Albany   to Schenectady
<br>
                       today  right over our house, but not all at once. "
<br>
                       "Eld Anna and the girls rode  In auto truck to Loudonville home of Mrs.   Chas.  Schupps
<br>
                       with some old  furniture she had bought and stopped on their way   home at  the aviation
<br>
                       field to see the airplanes."
<br>

<b>26  Aug</b>     38 airplanes flew over today  in a race to Syracuse, Rochester,   Buffalo & Toronto,
<br>
                        prize $10,000.    "There has been a constant  heavy  rumbling in the air allday.   Our
<br>
                        necks were on the stretch and it  took much of our time  running  in and out of the house,
<br>
                        locating and watching   the machines.   Didn't know  but we would need Sloan's   Liniment. ..
<br>
                        to rub our nexks with.   The planes did skim along beautifully and swiftly  and looked  I ike
<br>
                        huge  devil darning needles or birds."
<br>

<b>27 Aug</b>      Several bad accidents in the air  derby.  They all stopped at  Quentin Roosefelt  Field.
<br>
                        Several smashed and several   aviators badly hurt, one seriously, was taken  to Homeopathic
<br>
                        Hospital in Albany but will  recover.
<br>
                        Eld Caroline, Mary and Eleanor made 84 glasses elderberry     j e l l y and canned
<br>
                        34 qts. elderberries.  ((Maggie  Caldwell  used to be the  jelly& preserve maker;   Eld
<br>
                        Caroline  has now-apparently taken   over this responsibility.)
<br>

<b>28  Aug</b>     Eld Caroline  & Mary put up 7 pts cape gooseberries   (or ground cherries)and  11 1/2 qts
