12 June Jennie Wells goes to St. Peters Hospital to have a small cancer taken from her breast
(she is 47 years old).


21 June Eld. Anna, Freida, Mary & Grace leave for 2 week trip to Canterbury, NH, Alfred, Me
& Sabbathday Lake. Did not enjoy itat SBL at all.

24 June Maggie Caldwell filled her suitcase with clothes and leftfor Albany after dinner without
a word to anybody. "We all think her mind is unbalanced. She imagines everybody is
talking against her when no one is even thinking of her. "

25 June Jennie Wells home from hospital. Looks quite frail.

11 July Maggie is still
away and nobody knows where. She does not send any word and they do
not intend to hunt her up,

13 July Picked 22 barrels of beans. I strung a barrelfullalone,

14 July All hands to ChF to string beans. After they came home at 4 p.m.. Eld. Caroline & Lucy
canned a crate of raspberries.

24 July Barbara Hooper at ChF 74 years old today. Recently made trip to Philadelphia to see
relatives, going and coming alone.
Eld. Anna had another I ight stroke of paralysisthis a .m*and another after dinner but
gradually circulation came back.
Maggie has been in Albany over 4 weeks without permission; both Dr. Stillmanand Dr.
Lothridge say her mind is unbalanced; Hugo goes today to Mt. Lebanon to get Ministry
Sisters to dealwith her case. They blame Eld. Anna's strokes on Maggie's behavior.
Maggie felt she should have been made second to Eld. Anna instead of Eld. Caroline, "but
no one in the family was willing to live under her because she is a bigot and a tyrant, a
regular Irish boss and a terriblyignorant one at that... "

27 July Elder Water Shepherd & Ministry Si sters met with Maggie in Albany; "she would hear
no terms of settlement. "

28 July Eld. Anna called a meeting regarding Maggie, "Each one was called upon to speak freely
... We a l ltold how we felt... 1 said that from her actions and talk I feltsatisfied she is
a crazy woman and should be placed in Poughkeepsie. Not a single person wanted her
back here and this she was told."

29 July Eld. Walter & Ministry Sisters to Albany to see Maggie by appointment. She has hired
Lawyer Knottman and threatens to bring suit against theShakers." The Ministry offered
her a home at Mt. Lebanon North Family but she insists on coming back to Watervliet SF,
which they refuse. Meeting ended with Eld. Walter telling her to go ahead and sue.
"Knottman was very insulting and horrid toEld. Walter & Eld. Anna. " Eld. Walter
went back to Mt. Lebanon.

2 Aug Eld. Walter came and with Ministry went to Albany to see Maggie. No settlement again.
Eld. Josiah, Eld. Anna & Eld. Catherine go in "to sign offto Maggie. No go. She
only got them in there to make fools of them."
