26 Oct Eld. Walter Shepherd, Eldeesses Sarah Berger & Leila Taylor arrive from Mt. Lebanon at
8 a.m. Can't stay for funeral as they leave for So. Union, Ky. this evening, stopping
over in Cleveland and Cincinnati.
Eld. Anna wired Harriet Jones and Eld. Caroline to come home; Eld. Caroline, as' a
Trustee, was needed.
27 Oct Funeral; delegations from Mt. Lebanon & Hancock. Service led by Eld 0Ernest Peck,
" most beautiful speaker." About T O O or more outsides, oak casket, 12 autos followed
hearse to cemetery.
31 Oct Had been arranged by ministry with Eld. Anna &'ChFam that Hugo was to take charge of
hired hands at ChF and run the farm. All seemed to agree. "Today Julia McNally came
down on a special pilgrimage to inform E!d 0Anna that Fred Willey, Eld 0Mary (Nelson),
Libby DeLong and herself would attend to and run their own place, they did not want any
of our help and wished we would mind our own business. So Eld. Anna said they would
drop everything until the ministry's return." They had also asked ministry to have Eld.
Caroline & Lucy to move to Office at ChF, but have now backed down. Eld. Caroline
& Lucy "had in truthno idea of going anyway unless ministry insisted."
Abbie Bartlett (of ChF) came to SF store inp.m. and visited Anna Goepper & told her it
was Eld. Mary and Libbie DeLong ("the coarse specimens of humanity") who told SF to
mind their own business.

/Nov 20 Hear that Maggie Caldwell left Mt. Lebanon NF in J*4^7 leaving Shakers for good, had
clothes sent to NYC where she expects to live with a cousin.
23 Nov After much discussion between Eld. Walter Shepherd, Eld.Arthur etc., agreed ChF would
run their own affairs. Eld. Mary Nelson wanted Julia McNalley appointed as trustee but
she refused, saying "she neither felt capable or able" but was willing to help all she could
"but wanted no break or hard feelings with the SF. So Eld. Anna & Eld. Caroline w i l l
continue as trustees for both families. "We understand also there is to be no more canning
at the ChF of any kind. So the canning ends. " The Ministry didn't argue the matter
because they said it was too hard work for the few sisters there are to do itand that is
the truth, although ithelped make our living.
19 Nov. Elder Walter at ChF straightening up Eld. Josiah's affairs,,A Mr 0 Bournes is owed $3500
and some of the hired hands several hundred.
25 Nov James Tribley died at Niskayuna, aged 71 Worked for Shakers for 50 years, quitting at
ChF last fall, too sick tocontinue.
3 Dec Ella Wmship takes her calf, Marguerite Putnam, to Albany to have glasses. Came home
with tortoise shells and "now she will look more like a hoot owl than ever. It's first her
leg, then her eyes, next her throat, but Lord sakesi How she can eat, eat, eat!
10 Dec Eld* Caroline & Lucy walk to ChF to see Julia McNallen. "As they ail feelso free at
ChF to call on Byron Coburn for all their wants (running machine for laundry, fixing
washing machine, etc.) they should remember him with some of Eld 0Josiah's clothes
instead of giving the very best toFred Willey, the hired man."
