29 Aug The little girl was taken away by her adopted mother
who had brought her.
At Groveland they have had 2 fires - the last was their
grist mill valued at $20,000. They will not rebuild it.
13 Sept Mary and Angeline Wicks came and stayed until 16th but
both have lost their privilege.
16 Sept (Thurs) Meeting at WF with Spiritualists Peebles and
Starbuck. About half of Shakers attend.
25 Sept WF had canned 7000 cans sweet corn and 6000 of tomatoes
and 1100 of the tomatoes were 1/2 gal. cans.
11 Oct Permelia^Earl is and has been down some time with a bad
foot. /
21 Oct Alvira Conklin and Ann Maria Damph went to Albany and
bought a sewing machine for $58.
23 Oct Theo. Bates^carried to infirmary (2d house).
26 Oct Issachar^ates carried to 2d house. Some think he had a
slight stroke.
30 Oct Aaron Sonburg and Adam, a hireling, got in the mangle-
wurzles. (large, coarse, yellow to reddish-orange beet
grown for cattle feed)
13 Nov We bought over 5 tons of broom corn at 7 1/2.
15 Nov Albert^Twiss died at CF.
Took in 15 year old boy, Edward Yates, from Albany.
"Have not had a boy in the family since last April."
30 Nov The boat came u/p river to Troy but when returning with
1/2 a load the ice wore it so that it sunk before it
reached Poughkeepsie. 13 lives lost. The ice all froze
in 2 days and 1 night.
8 Dec John Decker sold 20 acre lot beyond Kearney place to
Valentine Alheim for $2250.
9 Dec issachar^Bates "quite out of his mind and has to have
attendants."
14 Dec issachai: died last night. 85 years old
18 Dec Frank Langlois, 15 years old, came here from SF to live.
25 Dec Christmas at home. Elders and deacons to CF in p.m.
"to answer the Ministry to the beard question. 10 out
of 14 brethren were strongly against it."
Almira^Watkins died. 70 years old
"What the Ministry will do about the beard question
which has grown strong, in particular at Lebanon and
Union Village, will be seen. Anyhow the brethren and
even the sisters here in Watervliet are in general very
strongly opposed to it. The papers criticize on it and
justly too."
