Augustus made 20 scoops in 5 days.
19 Mar Ministry came and labored with Peter Schmidt and talked
with Charles Joslyn.
24 Mar Augustus made 16 long handled shovels and 3 neck yokes.
Ill Apr Charles Joslyn turned away. "Smart and obliging but
no rest."
23 Apr Charles Joslyn stole in our house. In bed with Frank.
"We have at present only 4 men and myself and a boy,
Frank Muller, to work the farm. Aaron Sonenburg and
Herman Muller are in the garden. Our temporal and
financial state is good enough which cannot be said of
all Shakers."
3 May Four of WF attended funeral of Liza Wells at CF, "the
last of that great family."
9 May Six sisters and the writer attend Laura Prentiss'
funeral at CF.
18 May Paulina started for Philadelphia "to her colored family
for the last time. I presume Deborah Knight
accompanied her." Returned June 7.
19 May Ann M. Reynolds died. Sick 2 weeks. Age 75-11-20.
21 May Ann's funeral. Two elders and one elder sister came
from each of other families. Good funeral.
12 June Frank Muller left. Here a year.
26 June Four horses cultivate, 2 ox teams plow and 5 of us
hoe. "The numnber of brethren is reduced to 8, sisters
21 and all but 6 could earn a living if they had suit-
able employment."
Farm hands are scarce. We have a poor team. Cornelius
Grimm, our best hand, left for Indiana.
16 July John Ebisch taken in, 26 years old. Has a crippled
arm. "Some ailment is attached to almost all that come
these days. They need salivation but want it cheap."
7 Nov Herman Klages, a candidate, came from Philadelphia.
14 Nov Herman went to Albany to go back to Philadelphia but
"it felt so oppressive that he came back."
19 Nov Klages "set out."
28 Nov Henry Kremmer, 22 years old, came as a candidate.
1 Dec Elder Giles Avery came with Herman Muller from Ohio
"who is very friendly to Believers and may possibly
join yet . "
9 Dec Augustus (?) "who worked here this fall and to whom I
then offered a privilege, came for one today. I told
him to come in the spring for now we would think him
a winter Shaker."
21 Dec Herman Klages went to Philadelphia to get his clothes
and, if possible, his wife and son.
23 Dec Henry Kremer "set out." Read the covenant in German
and English as well as he could before signing it.
25 Dec Xmas. "Had a good meeting and more for the mouth than
the stomach could bear, which some found out."
