25 Dec. "Christmas we kept as usual, with the addition of some of our German neighbors
or hired help attending our forenoon meeting, making quite a sensation amongst
some of the family. There were 12 males and 3 females. They expressed great
satisfaction with the meeting. Elder Augustus addressed them in German, of
course unintelligible to those of us not belonging to thatnation, but well under-
stood ifnot appreciated by them. After meeting they partook of a good dinner
prepared for them, and those living on the out farms took their departure for
home. They were all evidently pleased with the notice (Alexander having
invited them to attend our meeting if they desired to) but whether any good will
come out of itremains for the future to disclose. They appeared simple and
serious and behaved with propriety, and we can but hope that they will be bene-
fited some by this opportunity.... Deborah, Emma and Philip given an opportunity
to sign the Covenant with which Philip and Emma complied but Deborah refused
to do so, her motive best known to herself."
