5 May Eldress Paulina started for Philadelphia today, to see the colored Believers there,
4 or 5 in number, now under the ministration of littleRebecca Parrott who lived
at the South Family some years ago and left there for Philadelphia to preach the
faith to the colored people there. Caty Ferguson from the Church, Samuel
Herbert andjuoason from Church at Lebanon are also with Eldress Paulina./^c^)
Alexander having business there and elsewhere accompanies them. -
8 May Edward (Powers) moved out of the frontroom over to the Tinkers Shop, He is so
troublesome that itwill not do for him to sleep with anybody in his present
deranged state. Ifneeded will have watchers to stay with him.
Eldress Ann and Eldress Polly here today setting us up with a trade for sale work
making boxes out of popple.
Fri., May 30 Edward Powers brought back today, has been wandering about since Tuesday.
6 June Brethren making a place in the Tinkers Shop to shut Edward up as he is getting
very troublesome.
8 June Edward Powers disappeared from home again. Isaac spent the day looking for him,
returned without Edward.
14 June Isaac spent today searching to find some trace of Edward but without avail as
no one seems to know anything about him.
16 June Alexander gone to Cohoes, to see if he can learn anything about Edward. A
man being advertised in some of the Troy papers, no description given, merely
that he was found floating in the river. Alexander returned home with the
intelligence that the body found in the riveris that of Edward Powers.
20 June Shubel, John Decker and Isaac went to Cohoes to attend the coroner's inquest
over Edward's body.
21 June Attended funeral ofBr. Edward P.
1 July Daniel Perry concluded to leave for the third time. One would naturally con-
clu^he might now try something besides Shakerism.
18 Oct. Clean the Corn House this afternoon for the purpose of using it forthe Boys'
School this winter, as Isaac is obliged to be the teacher, and cannot afford to
go down to the church every day through the cold and his help is so much needed
at home.
29 Oct. "FIRE!. Last night the family had mostly retired tar est excepting Elder Augustus
who with a hired man was still making cider when ab out quarter to 10 o'clock,
our big bellbegan to ring. Instantly the whole family were aroused, and to our
horror and amazement, our big barn was all ablaze, the falmes roaring and
crackling with seeming eagerness striveing to devour, all that was within their
reach. Charles Pretch was the first to discover it, had been tending engine all
day and had come up from the engine room about 9 o'clock said he went around
some, did not notice anything unusual, he retired to rest but could not get to
sleep, he turned over, and saw the windows all litup. He said to Shubel, "1
believe there is a fire," They both got up and saw that itwas a reality. Shubel
went and began to ring the bellimmediately/ this ofcourse aroused us, and
never will that night be forgotten by us, to see the hard earning ofour Brethren
so suddenly laid waste. It was a grand but awful sight to behold, all our hay,
grain and everything was burnt. The cattle were all saved thro the presence of
mind of Isaac, who as soon as possible ran to the barn, threw open the gates,
and let the panic-stricken animals go theirway, the$j ran moaning down the lane.
As itwas not very late in the night and outsiders had not gone to bed, we soon
