1 March This day completed in remembrance of Mother's-birth. Meeting same as
Sabbath. Abby & Aureiia had to stay out of meeting because they had 13
hired men and 2'gardeners to feed.
4 A visitor asked for 2 bottles of sarsaparilla syrup and offered a $5 bill
on the Commercial Bank of Friendship. Bill refused sdjieoffered one on
Commercial^ank of Whitehall, saying he knew it to be good. It was counterfeit.
Raised the extract building.
8 (Sat) 26 of the world here to dinner (also 13 hired men).
16 (Sun) 10 members of Legislature and 2 drivers eat dinner.
19 Henry Pinchback, a boy who had lived here a few months, left to go to
England with his father.
29 Packed up $172 of bonnets to go to^larvard to be sold by them.
Some clue from Road Commissioner about man who passed the counterfeit money.
30 , 19 men,women & drivers of Legislature attended meeting & took dinner.
31 Went to West Troy to see if they identify the man who gave them the counter-
feit money but, because they did not take the evidence with them, the con-
stable could not make the arrest.
2 April Went to West Troy again. Fred had promised to go tohelp the 2d Family
with some business in Troy so he was late to the hearing in West Troy and
missed giving his evidence. The culprit was put back in j a i lancfrhe
Shakers promised to go again the next day.
3 TojWest Troy again, injfime. Fred went in'and saw the prisoner, patted him
on the shoulder, advised him to turn state's evidence. When Fred left,
the prisoner was allowed to go get a beer and made his escape. "So a I I * we
had to do was come home, and all because the Second Family's business was
of so much more importance than our own yesterday."
4 "A poor woman came on 29fh with "a distressed thumb" to get it doctored.

24 Took'-cloth to Waterbury's to be dressed.
25 Mrs. Corning and 2 other women came & had dinner.
26 Ellen Gary has spun 75 runs of linen. Began on 15th.
3 May Bought a lot of crockery for NF, 300-400 yards shirting; shipped 2 box es
of baskets & fans to Caliahans, Niagara Falls.
5 Aurelia began teaching school today. Went to Albany for engine for extract
bui I d i n g .
6 An Englishman, Hughes, requested hisfrwo bo$s be taken. CC got Elder Bro
and' he agreed tofgotto Troy and see the boys.
7 Elder Bro went to Troy and brought boys home, George & John Hughes, 10 & 12,
to stay for a few weeks.
8 Took Ellen Gary to Albany. She received $20;for her lost trunk of clothing.
10 A Harvard brother, Lemuel Tomkins, went with Justice,, bought 2 pieces of
striped chambray "that was quite defective."
12 CC got 75 fresh shad and 200 leaves bleached palm leaf.
15 Elder John Lockwood came from Groveland with Wvlt Ministry, but then went
on to Lebanon "to make if his home."
19 Masons finished foundation wall of barn.
21 A poor woman came and asked to have her children taken -- two boys and one
little girl. She told .a very pitiful story. Kept the women and children over-
1 -night. Took 2 more boys from SF. Drawing lumber for barn very day.
22 Elder Sister Eliza came to see the women who came yesterday and they went
home with her. Their names are George, Arthur & Harriet Vandewater.
24 6 doz. bonnets made at NF.

26 Twelve of WF and SF brethren came to place the timbers on the barn founda-
tion and make ready for the raising.
28-29 Raised the great barn and "it came together very nicely. Superintended by
Loren J. Wicks. About 70 brethren engaged on it. Finished about 6 pm.
31 School superintendent visited our school with DAB; Chapman B-. & Stephen
Wells. Appeared very well satisfied, "spoke to the children considerable
telling them to prize their privilege of getting a good education and spec-
ially the way in which they were brought up, that they were w h o l l y excluded
from learning evil 'in the streets..."
4 June SB, Jesse & others are at work' on the new road, building bridges etc.
10 Little g i r l named Anna Hitchcock brought by her aunt to stay.
12 Brought two men from Albany to tin the roof of the barn.

and carpet factory in Troy for worsted (30 Ibs. in the
skein at 400/lb), and linen yarn from Lansi ngburgh.
23 Dr. Wing and his partner tapped Martha Bates (aged 13") and drew off 22 Ibs.
of water. She lived about 2 hours more. ^
24 Solomon Gale came here to live and Gordon Horton went to NF in his place.
27 Took their wool to Schaghticoke to be combed. 18 came from Troy & had
tea & strawberries.
28 Finished tinning barn roof.
9 July "Commenced making extract in the new place by a steam engine."
10 Took Elizabeth & Helen Ellis to West Troy to'their parents,
to Saratoga to get cicuta.
12 Jesse (Harwood) saw Jenny Lind in Schenectady.
Sat. Frances Ingham has made upper mind toleave and has come to the Office to
stay over the Sabbath.
13 Harriet Ingham came to'see Frances.
14 CM & John Ingham took Frances to Schenectady and "put her bag & baggage on
the cars to go to Watertown."
18 Put the first load of hay in the new barn.
19 Mary Ellis let it be known that she wanted to go to her mother and she
was taken in the afternoon.
24 Sarah & Edwin Hays came to see Arabella.
27 Heavy shower with violent wind in early afternoon did considerable damage
to new barn by starting the rafters & ripping off the tin on one end.
3 Aug Canterbury Ministry visiting. "Had publick meeting as usual. A great many
spectators. Attending meeting in the sanctuary with the Canterbury Ministry
& our ministry, CF & NF. Had a very pretty meeting. At 5 pm the visitors
went with the Ministry Elders, brothers & sisters to'the Centre. Had a
very interesting time, considerable speaking. The fami Iy visited in the
forenoon."
12 Chas. Brackett & Willoughby Green changed; Chas. took the boys, W. the brooms.
14 Fred & Daniel went to Albany to attend court about Wiley's cattle. Sued
Wiley for $100.
25 People from Cohoes brought a 2 year old girl named Sarah Pennington. Born
in England, both parents are dead. We kept her.
27 CM and one of his boys are out gathering herbs daily.
1 Sept DAB took Mori ah G i l let& all her girls out for a ride to Cohoes, ,
the River Farm etc.
2 Sept Willoughby, Susanna & Ruth Green were taken to Schenectady to take the
train to Utica & Watertown to see about property left by their uncle.
Home on 8th.
4 14 people came & wanted dinner; we refused.
5 Brethren drew off the mill pond and caught loads of fish; gave all the
families some & rest taken to Albany & sold for $6.
8 Sally Cook & Harriet Slater leaving; taken to Albany to get boat for NYC.
Daniel took a boy., James Savage "over the river to go from whence he came."
10 Almira (Teachout)'and Lydia began to quilt a comforter.
12 E. Ask & Ruth Green went to the Mansion place afoot to pick saffron.
13 Almira, Lydia & 2 girls have made 2 comforters for the boys, 2 for the
hired men.
16 CM, Jennet & PAB went to Niskayuna to pick the saffron.
18 Sisters cut apples in the morning, picked hops;in afternoon. Elder Sister
is helping E. Ask prepare corn for brushes. DS, Charles & all the boys
went to Niskayuna cutting carrot seed.
19 Fred has been 2-3 days around the neighbors trying to get a jury in favor
of a road through by Cregiers (to the River).
21 A poor boy names Richard McGown came & begged to be taken. CC agreed to
let him work on the corn at the Island.
23 CC & Fred held meeting at MOrrises with 15 men of the town concerning a
new road to the Island to have it go thru Cregier's land. "They all came
here to di nner."
27 Had "raising" at their farm called Pleasant H i l l ,with 20 brethren from CF,
10 from each of other families. Sisters gave them "regular dinner" for 45
(including hired men), eating at 3 different settings in the stoop.
2 Oct DAB, Elder Sister & Lucy Fuller went to Lebanon to see Ministry. "It is a
trying time."
3 Ransom Guilford & Calista Elsworth came to'the Office after supper; they
have concluded to leave.
4 Ransom left for Albany.
5 SB took Calista to Albany and all the goods pertaining to them.
6 Jeremiah MuI Iy left, went to the railroad on foot.
7 "John Ingham came with the intention of taking his children & Harriet but
she came to the CF & saw him with the children and he could get none of them."
10 Joseph Preston died.
21 Jeremiah MuI Iy & his father were in Albany & wanted to see Sally. CC took
Jeremiah's clothes, seeds etc. tdsettle with him but he was ugly & would not i
take what they gave h i m .
22 Noah Hughes came to bind his boys.
23 Got $100 worth of tow & linen yarn from Schaghticoke.
Went after "sumac bobs" for coloring.
24 Elijah Myrick from Harvard for/a visit.
Got 30 Ibs. fine split palm leaf for about $10.
26 This is the day for the general opening. Rise at 4, meeting at 5.
28 Little Phebe Freeman's mother came tojsee her. She was considerably deranged,
wanted tojstay but we persuaded her to go to her daughter.
30 CC & CP went to Albany & saw Jeremiah Mully's father. He took the things
& behaved we!I.
4 Nov Deacons of CF & NF went all around to see what buildings it is best to
repair next year and have the matter decided.
5 Sisters washed white gowns.
7 Brother Amos finished making a counter for the Office shop, brought it,
CV & Lydia filled the drawers, etc.
8 Some' cloth taken to Waterbury's to be dressed; some^aken to Hancock to
Sat. be pressed, someone came into evening meeting & said thieves were cutting
poles on Shaker land.
9 CC & Fred went out early looking for thieves but did not find.
10 CC & Fred went to Albany about the thieves & met them with the poles.
Jesse built 1st fire in Meeting House this year - 1 bu. coal.
12 We were spoken to this evening in meeting that Maynard was to live in the
Deacons' room in Daniel's place.
16 (Sun) Brethren & sisters had a meeting by themselves with the Ministry, each
their own sex.
17 "Fred & SB went to Albany to attend court regarding the wood thieves, Fred
Damp & Peter Camp, but it was a bad day, could not get a jury."
20 Jane Wright came from Philadelphia, "wanted to get somewhat acquainted
with Believers." Taken to SF.
24 David "Miller & Fred went to Albany "to attend court in the Maltbe case."

27 Jonathan Cole died of consumption at WF.
29 Chios Wood died.
30 Catherine Vedder came into the Office, Lucy Fuller left.
2 Dec Brought from Albany an 11 year old girl, Sarah Shook,that wants to live
with us.
6 "John Low, a crazy drunkard, has been around a day or two. This morning
about 4 am, he came again cursing & swearing. C. Miller took him into
the shop to keep him quiet. We gave him some breakfast,, then Fred & CC
took him to Albany & gave him up to the police to be taken care of."

12 Again in court; they had cleared Fred Damp but Peter had not had his trial

17 A man from StiI(wafer came to make some inquiries about the Believers.
He has had a deal of trouble with his wife. Stayed here overnight and
after breakfast went to SF.
20 Fred went to Albany, released" Peter Camp from jail.
22 Jesse went after pipe stems.
24 CC bought 50 Ibs. of tobacco in Albany.
25 Christmas. Kept it the same as usual. In thejafternoon the Trustees of
NF came on a visit & stayed until 7 p.m.
27-8 Asenath Harwood died (about mi dn i ght/f'Ve 5~7- ?~} 3
29 14 sisters and as many or more brethren went to NF for funeral of Asenath.
"We had a very comfrtable funeral; she spoke thru two instruments."
30 CC went, on foot to Niskayuna to pay the taxes in that town.

21 jan Justice Harwood brought out from Albany Orlando Miller, a medium; on 22d
he visited the CF folks.
22 David Richmond visiting from Enfield, Ct.
23 Ministry all came to see David; "he had somejcommun ications for them from
the spirit land. Elder Rufus gave him some money to help him on his way
home. He started on foot for the railroad.
24 "Ifjwas ascertained this morning that some demon in human shape had stole
the large fat ox they were fattening. 10 or 12 brethren started in pursuit,
they tracked him beyond the tavern."
Two men came to say they had seen ox beyond East Troy, on the back part of
the city. "It seems the thief could get him no further for he fell down
in the street." SB, Josiah, Fred & Maynard went off to Troy, had ox half
way home when he refused to go further. Maynard & Josiah stayed to fix
him comfortabale for the night; went back to get him the next day, "...got
home while we were in moving meeting, very much fatigued."
26 Brought a boy named Oscar Merchant from Albany.
27 Four brethren went to Troy. "There was a man caught in West Troy by the
name of Williams, supposed to be'the thief. He was taken in custody & lodged
in jail to await his trial. He has spent 17 years of his life in state
prison at three different times.
Two English boys taken here to live. Brought Sarah Shook from SF to live at CF.
