2 Jan Ruth is finishing offsome little boxes Eldress Annhas framed. Lydia is making baskets.

4 Jan Mary has made 4 doz. baskets since she went out of the kitchen.

15 Jan It is extremely cold these days. Hired men are drawing muck on the orchard and manure
and coal from the city.

24 Jan "Betsey Stone and a woman and her daughter, she is a spiritualistand has 2 small girls
at the NF. They came to visitthe school and came to the CF to have dinner."

29 Jan Maria Shepperman brought her 14 year old daughter, Josephine, to join her younger sisters.

31 Jan Brother Joseph Pelham taken to sick house. One eye entirely blind plus other infirmities.

1 Feb "A great many poor men came along today begging for work/ food and the 1 ike. "
"Little Agnes was brought back today and the old woman meant we should keep her but
we did not. "

9 Feb "We have no company about these days; ifthey love us they cannot get here to tell us
of it."

18 Feb "Elizabeth Smith's mother came and took her away with her. She has not been here a
year. They being Catholics, there could be nothing to prevent it. The girl felt verybad."
A woman came to leave her daughter and was sent to SF.

23 Feb Thomas Almond left with his brother-in-law and another young man.

1 Mar Adda Woods left.

10 Mar Thomas Almond and Adda Woods came back after Adda's things.

12 Mar Elder Giles is partitioning the NE chamber of the Office.

14 Mar A German girl from Troy brought her little brother and sister to be taken.

25 Mar C. Miller and Jesse went to Albany about Peck law case. The opposition lawyer and Peck
"had mostly been examined" and the case was postponed for 10 days.

"Chauncey Miller and Jesse went to Schenectady with C. Copley to sign some papers
relative to the NF buying the Gibson place.

Chauncy & Jesse to Albany about law suit -gave their testimony and in a few days they
will know the result of the case.

Jesse & Fre'egift to Albany so Freegift could chose lumber to make some bedsteads for
the Office.
Mother of the two Crandell boys came to see them.

12 Apr Brother Joseph Pelham is veryfeeble in body and mind.
Got a sack of coffee and chest of tea "so we can drink and be merry."

18 Apr Brother Asa Seaton died. Has been confined all winter in his room in the iwell ing house
and in the sick house.

21 Apr Brother Joseph Pelham died. He has dbeen a great sufferer most of his days. Was the
best public speaker we ever had in our Society, his loss will be felt in thatrespect very, much

A man brought 2 boys - Fred and William Pflug. (No mention of Bro. Joseph's funeral,)

"Nehemiah went to Albany with the 2 German boys, Fred and Will, to have them bound."

"A man came to see the Shakers that writes for the Tribune. He is visiting different
Societies to gather information."

27 May Elder Daniel and Elder Giles, Church elders and 2 brothers from 2d and NF begin painting
the Meeting House. \s are painting the

29 May Edward Fowler brought them 8200 yds. of carpet ordered from Germany, $1 .50 per yard.

30 May A young man and woman came and brought a ne^/phew of theirs.

3 June Nehemiah went to Troy to see the Crandell woman about having her boys bound.

7 June "Brethren paint roof of Meeting House in a.m. About 4 p.m. there was a heavy shower
and it washed the red paint down on the white Meeting House.. . and it looked as though
they had been butchering. The families came and cleaned the Meeting House, justgot
through when the floods descended." A large past of the CF turned out after supper and
washed the red paint off the windows and sides of the Meeting House.

10 June Jesse took Abbie and Ruth and some baskets to go to Saratoga. Return the next day.

15 June The SF have been painting the Meeting House blinds and now bring them back and put
Sat. back in place.

12 July Josephine and Caroline Shepperman taken to their mother in Albany. "Little Augusta
was not willing to go so she remains forthe present."
Lydia and Mary went to Joiners Shop and stained the bedsteads Brother Freegift has
made for the Office.

16 July Mason comes and begins work on a cistern to be buSlt to hold water from the Office slate
roof to augment the reservoir of pond water that supplies barns and wash house,

18 July Anna Purtell's sister came to see and have her go and Anna went.

24 July "Five different companies of the world were here today; bought isonsiderable in the store -
baskets and a chair." Lydia's head feels best when she can get some money.

26 July C. Miller with Harriet Vaughn drove to Niskayuna depot at 5 a.m,, left the horse, took
" cars to Schenectady, bought her a ticket for Zanesville, Ohio where her father or brother
wiLl meet her. "

26 July The mother and sister of the Pflug boys came to see them and stayed until Monday,

29 July Clarence's mother and little brother and uncle came to see him and bind him to Charles
and the shoemaking trade 7 but Clarence decides to go with his mother instead.

1 Aug The Treadway boys go home to Bridgeport, Conn.

2 Aug Anna Purtell's brother-in-law came to see if Anna was there; she had gone away about
6 p.m. the day before.

7 Aug Ruth has gone to the shed to work on feather dusters. Lydia has begun on some very large
baskets. Mason is repairing the large bridge by the washhouse.

16 Aug Has rained about 5 inches in this week and today it rained so hard all day they had to
bring fhe chickens into the house to keep them from drowning.

24 Aug Benjamin Chick runs canning operation and has a bed in the canning house for him to
sleep. They have canned about 300 doz. cans of corn or succotash this week.

25 Aug Public meeting. Now have no speaker so usually DABuckingham reads to them.

31 Aug 92 doz. cans tomatoes canned today.

10 Sept Sisters work on tomatoes in a.m.; in p.m. they cut 14 barrels of apples to dry.

15 Sept Brother John Robe came to speak at public meeting. Excellent.

17 Sept "All hands commence the work at the canning house in good spirits but fewin number,"

20 Sept The Crandell woman came and took her boys home with her.

22 Sept Elder Giles Avery spoke at the public meeting.

12 Oct Go to Albany to meet group from Groveland who have been visiting in Lebanon. They
are Henry Cantrell/ Justin BudSne, Laura Dole 7 Lavinia Dutcher & Polly Lee.

13 Oct After publ Jcmeeting/ General Sheridan and Col. Schuyler Crosby called and six from
South America/ some of whom could not speak one word of Engl ish. Nearly all the
family came and shook hands with them.

16 Oct The father of the Pflug boys came to see them and stayed all night.

19 Oct Have had a new drying shed built and itis heated for the first time withits rack filled
with chicory root.

20 Oct Public meeting is closed for the season. Quite a number of carriages came and the people
Sun, were much disappointed.... "We felt almost lost without visitors. "

23 Oct "They finish digging potatoes at the South farm. Women dug most of them. C. Miller
paid 20-30$ per barrel for them. There were 301 barrels. The women then picked the
popcorn - 100 barrels.
Louisa Fairchild died at 2d Order where she had lived for nearly 50 years.

26 Oct Widow Townsend, daughter of Gen. Van Rensselaer, and-Mrs. Van Sanford and their
children / visited and walked around some.

29 Oct Michael and Patrick Burk work at the extract business and Philip Smith tends to the drying
of roots.

1 Nov A girlIda who had been there for two weeks is takento Albany to be returned toher mother
in Ballston Spa. "She did not prove to be the right kind."

2 Nov John and Patrick Burk went to West Troy to make a fence around their father's grave.

6 Nov Pamelia Wicks came to visit. "Itis'30 years since she saw many of the sisters but she
knew them all. "

15 Nov. Robert Wagan brought more chair frames from Mt. Lebanon -Lydia pays $44 for 18 frames.

18 Nov Katie Bickford's fatherand brother came at 2 a.m., rang the doorbell 3 or 4 times,
C. Miller got up, let them in and tput them to bed.

3 Dec Stanton Buckingham goes to 2d Family to see Justice Harwood - itis thought he w i l l
not
survive many days.

4 Dec "No company but beggars. "

12 Dec Robert Wagan came with chairs for dining room at dwelling and got some canned stuff
for the Delevan House.

17 Dec "The ministry go to all the families to administer the yearly gift. "
Justice Harwood died last midnight, aged 78. "Has spent a long and useful life and been
Trustee a great part of the time."

20 Dec "Some beggars. Among the number, two men went tothe men's house to eat and warm
themselves and stole Wm. Gilroy's coat and comforter. Thos. Gilroy pursued, and with
some of the neighbors, caught the oldest man who had the comforter on. Took them to Albany

21 Dec Justice Cole sentenced the man to 3 months in penitentiary.

25 Dec Had an excellent meeting with the Ministry and 2d Order. Oysters for dinner.
No hired men for dinner, one to supper.

31 Dec "A woman came from beyond Albany togive the Shakers a boy 2 months old. We'declined
the offer."

I Jan "Our family is eightless than a year ago - adults as well as children. Brother Joseph and
Asa have died the death of the righteous and Phebe Ann has moved to the 2d Order."

6 Jan George Price went on Western seed journey instead ofC. Miller.

9 Jan George Wright came to see his grand-daughter Fannie and bound her to DAB.

13 Jan Taxes only $997.87 this year, down $270.

18 Jan Jesse went somewhere to cut some pipe stems.

19 Jan "We had a read this morning, given in 1841 . The fulfillment of considerable
Sun. part of it we have already seen, the rest is not verypleasing to reflect upon. "

20 Jan Thirteen hired men here, all busy doing something. Tom & Bill both go to Albany every
day drawing manure or coal.

26 Jan "We sung in the morning meeting and then tried tolabor some in the square march, a
^manner we exercise not some 2>or 30 years."

14 Feb Dr. Wade sick and "it is not thought he w i l l
survive long. He has sent for C. Miller and
this afternoon he went. EldressElizabeth, Janett and Matilda went with him.

20 Feb Mary Valance came to see about coming herself.

22 Feb Clarence Valance left or ran away this morning.

25 Feb Nehemiah went to Troy to see Mary Valance - she appeared very bitter.

26 Feb Funeral of Dr. Wade.

27 Feb. Cl inton Smith's wife died of diphtheria . "He feels very igad. " (He apparently is a regular
hired hand.)

29 Feb Six of hired men went do the funeral and C Miller letthem use two of CF spans of horses.

II Mar "The father of the Shepperman girls came to see them. He has been in prison ever since
they have been here."


21 Mar Elder Giles Avery has been putting up a partition in the north garret forkeeping bedding
and having a clothes room for the sister inmates of the Office.

28 Mar Abbie moved from Office where she has lived for 18 years and Samantfia will take her place.

3 Apr "Lydia is making the blue spreads over for the brethren single beds."
U5arah Dean is going to Mt. Lebanon to finish her days in her former home. "
