11 Dec Sheep are back out in the pasture- very pleasant forthe time of year.

14 Dec Benjamin Starbuck and daughter and Nellie Brigham (spiritualists) arrived. "Most of the
Society were here In the evening to meeting. Nellie spoke beautifully."

15 Dec "After breakfast Nellie went to the dwelling house/ had a beautiful poem for Eldress Ann and
Eldress Polly, told of two beautiful spirits that were with them and they were much pleased. "

17 Dec C. Copley brought another bale of broom corn from Schenectady. "He is trying tostart the
broom business in a small way. John Burk and the Dutch boy (Charles Bauer) will work on
itthis winter."

19 Dec "Elder Albert., Geo. Price andraome of the outsiders start on an investigating tour to the
Sat. Eddy Bros, where it is said theyhave wonderful spirit manifestations."

21 Dec "C. Miller learned Saturday evening the cabbage suit had gone against us and a mean
thing it is for the seed was good when sowed in season/ as most allsay that had the seed. "
"At 6:30 Elder Albert gave the family a chance to hear what he saw at the Eddy Bros., viz
whole forms of spirits/ etc. "

23 Dec Elder Albert has an advanced class of singers every Wednesday night. SOme come from all
Wed. the famil ies. "

25 Dec "Family had a meal of oysters, ittook about 5 gal. and C .C. got 10 Ibs. of crackers
and all were filled to overflowing."

15 Jan CC brought home some broom handles and corn from Albany.
Lydia and Samantha are working on baskets.

16 Jan CM paid the taxes - $1400 and some cents.

17 Jan CC (now 71 yrs) fell down some steps and hurt himself but broke no bones "butwill be unfit
Sun for duty. "

18 Jan Elder Solomon Rankin of So. Union Ky. (77 yrs. old) came to visit. Was thrown from the
sleigh going from Mt, Lebanon to Hancock yesterday and hurt his shoulder.
Two men and two ladies from Oneida Community visited foran hour or so,

23 Jan A woman from NY came to bring two girls to be taken and wanted to bring a boy also in
a week "but there is no room forthe boy."

25 Jan Elder Solomon left/ CM saw him safelyc?ra> his way to Cleveland.

29 Jan CC went to Schenectady after a broom vise.

2 Feb Brother James Russellcomes again to hold music school. He has been at Mt. Lebanon for
8 weeks and held 3 schools a day most of the time.

4 Feb Brother James had a school in the afternoon with the children.

7 Feb Had morning singing meeting. Soon after dinner Isaac Anstaff came with a newspaper some-
Sun, one had brought from Albany telling of a great fire at
the Mt. Lebanon Church Family.
Brother James did not want any more meetings today because he was much affected by the
news.

9 Feb At 4a.m. Josiah Barker came and took Elder Austin, Elder Albert and Brother James to go
to Mt. Lebanon to see about the fire. They ^returned in the evening with news that the
dwelling, ministry shop, sisters shop, woodhouse7 store building and 2 sheds and barns -
8 buildings in all - were destroyed.

12 Feb "All the won^ is what we could do to help the brothers and sisters atLebanon. They need
something besides sympathy. We learn Elder Daniel Bo^lWer fell and was badly burned in
the face, Elder Daniel Grossman fell and got hurt inwardly" and Andrew's collarbone was
broken.

19 Feb CC shipped a box of clothing from all the families to Lebanon.

22 Feb Lydia packed a box of baskets to go to Canterbury - about $28 worth.

23 Feb Amelia Hall's mother and one of her uncles came to see her. Her mother has no^ known where
her children were for 4 years. They made the father tell where they were.

25 Feb We have been trying to get some shirts tomake but failed. Ella and a girl have gone to work
on some little baskets.

27 Feb Mark Male Has been and taken everything out of the house where his father and mother are
living. "The old man has abused the woman and turned her out of doors. "

28 Feb Mf. Lebanon herb house burned to ground.

5 Mar Lydia is making some very small covered baskets to sell in the store. She took between 3-4
doz. baskets and gave them to the Mt. Lebanon Church Family as all of their supply was
burned up.

21 Mar John Taylor, John Carson and Mary Call signed the covenant.

22 Mar "Sarah Ann Willis hired a man from Troy to bring her out to the Shakers. She has been married,
had one child which she I eft at the hospital. She thought we would take her back after all .
We gave her some dinner and the driver some feed for his team, Lydia gave her $1 to help
and sent her away."

23 Mar CC brought home 1 doz. shirts to make.

27 Mar CC took the shirts back but was unable to get more.
William Hunter died. "He has been ajgreat sufferer."

29 Mar Lydia continues working on baskets; Ruth on feather dusters.

30 Mar Charles Bauer,'the Dutch boy, left and CM paid him off.
"Frank Hall's uncle and his lawyer that has been at work for 4 years to find where the children
were, came to see them. Frank told them he wanted to go with them but his father bound him
to Nehemiah and

4 April Mark Male leaves today. He and James Tribley have hired a place.

11 Apr "Eldress Lucy Fuller has gone tothe Second House this morning. She has been sick some time
but would not \g\ye up till now. "

15 Apr Eldress Lucy is much worse since noon.

16 Apr Eldress Lucy died. "She had watchers last nightfor the firsttime. She was born Sept 5, 1813.
Came among Shakers at 9 years of age."

18 Apr We had our funeral at 2:30. Most of the families came. She had a beautiful funeral/ none
Sun. too much. Katie Hallenbeck had a splendid piece that Eldress Asenath gave Aure\ia, Had
some nice verses and there were two new songs for her. It was none too much."

20 Apr Eldress Ann came from Mt. Lebanon Ministry.

24 Apr Eldress Ann appointed Lydia totake Eldress Lucy'splace and Abbie to come to the Office in
Sat. Lydia's place.

26 Apr The moving has commenced. Lydia is picking up her things toleave the Office.
Elder Giles started forHudson to attend the trialof Charles Harris (he has been apprehended
as the arsonist who torched the Mt. Lebanon buildings.)

27 Apr "Elder Daniel received a telegram to go to Hudson/ his testimony is wanted.
Eldress Ann is all
around as busy as a bee. Lydia is busy atwork getting her things together.
They have the measles very bad a*" $F*"

29 Apr Charles Harris is convi.cted ofarson in second degree and sentenced to state prison for10 years
for the first fire and 4 years for
the 2d fire.

30 Apr "CM sent for Mark Male to come and work forEdwin (Male). His dear daughter died this
morning about 8 . She has been sick about 3 weeks with brain fever."

1 May Lydia has her things about moved. She has moved her bed so she w i l lbe Eldress Lydia now.
Abbie has moved all her things to the Office. "Ruth & Barbara and Eliza Haines walked
down to Sarah Ann's to look at the corpse of little Martha. Her mother feels very bad/ she
was in her 13th year."

2 May Hired men also go to the funeral . CM lets them take 3 teams.

3 May "The Clayton boys' mother came to see them. They had written to her about the children
and wanted her totake them/ so she came,, and the brethren concluded to keep them and
try them some longer."

5 May Charles Hooper returned from England. His health has improved some.

6 May Albert Lomas moved from SF to 2d Order and Chauncy Dibble moved from 2d Order to SF .

10 May CC went to Grooms Corners for some apple trees. Philip Smith moved to Office to live.

18 May Buried Mary Hathaway today.

21 May Rachel Turk's mother and sister came to see her.

22 May Elder Giles has finished a very splendid desk for the elders' room.

26 May CM went to Troy "about tjje law suit."

10 June Sisters in Office had not been able to use their range for 4 months because of lack of water --
leaks in the aqueduce.t system. But now, with Chas. Hooper doing the difficult part, the
hired men have dup up the old logs and put innew ones and there is finally waterin the
Office kitchen again.

18 July "There was a strange woman came kd&tlast evening. She pretends she is a spiritualist."

19 July "Professor Hall came out here f o r a visit
and to rest."

20 July Professor Hall stayed in the office allday. He was quite busy writing.

21 July Prof. Hall gave a lecture on geology. His son and daughter came out to see him.

22 July CM took Prof. Hall for a ride.

23 July Prof. Hall gave another lecture in the Music Hall . His wife and daughter came and had
tea with him.

24 July CC took the Professor to Albany.

30 July CC hired one of the McLean boys to come and size broom corn.

2 Aug Sisters are busy making shirts forJohn E. Page.

4 Aug CC goes to Albany to try and find Rachel Turk's mother. "She has made up her mind to leave
the Shakers. She has lived among them 6 years. 11

5 Aug CM took Rachel to her mother.

12 Aug CM went to Albany. He is going to buy 200 acres of land on the pine plains at$20 per acre.

13 Aug A man came last night. He is trying to get up a new way of making paper out of wild
cucumber vines.

16 Aug Elder Giles went to see the land CM is planning tobuy.

20 Aug CCopley, GMiliber and ChaS Hooper went with surveyors to survey the new land.
John Decker at 2d Family, when unhitching his horses, had horses become
frightened and run away, dragging him and breaking some of his ribs and bruis-
ing him badly.
21 Aug "Victoria Woodhull and her sister came here, stopped a little while, looked
around some, had a cup of tea and then went to NF."
22 Aug Abbie and Samantha went to 2d Family to see John Decker.

3 Sept. Hear that the grist mill at Groveland has burned to ground.
16 Sept Mr. Starbuck and wife, James Peebles and Minnie Mar ? came for meeting at

17 Sept Starbucks visited until about '4 and then started for Troy.
24 Sept A pipe in the range burst and water went all over the cookroom (in the Office).
There were pies baking at the time buE;:fortunately no damage done. Chas.
Hooper and Sylvester worked all day and fixed the range so they could get
supper on it.
26 Sept J.M. Peebles and Albert Lornas exchanged places today and Peebles spoke in
Sun. Meeting House. Rained., so not many spectators.
27 Sept Some of Belle Pease's folks came to see her.
4 Oct "The boys kill 32 pigeons for the family."
Sept- Hallenbeck painting the buildings - dwelling house, infirmary or 2d house,
Nov "Almira's cottage, ' herb shop, seed store, trim on Stone Shbp, extract house,
broom shop, red shed.
15 Nov GG bought some broom corn from Witbeck.
16 Nov Just about 8 a.m. Albert Twiss "passed to the better land. He has been very
feeble for a great many years. He is abpout 78 years of age."
17 Nov Chas. Hooper put new bricks in our soap stone stove. Funeral at 2:30.
23 Nov "Hallenbeck finds plenty of painting to do yet. He is at work in the shed
back of the dwelling house."
27 Nov "A boy came last evening and wanted to stay. His father is living but has
a- stepmother. His way is quite- ^prepossessing. Ghas. Brackett is going to >
keep the boy on trial."
10 Dec Philip took some of our finished baskets to Pangburn to sell in his store
for the holy days.
14 Dec Issachar Bates died - 85 yrs.
15 Dec Several of brothers and sisters to go 2d Family for funeral.

1 Jan Sylvester Prentiss has been making a desk for the Office and it was moved
into the front room today for a New Year's present.
4 Jan "Eliza Haynes made up her mind to leave the Shakers, took the cars for Buffalo
to her mother."
27 Jan A relative of the Buckinghams named Isabelle DeVelling is visiting. Was at
2d Family, came to CF for a few days. "Has a pet squirrel for a companion."
8 Feb GGopley and Philip (Smith) go to Albany to take something to the poor accor-
ding to Mayor Judson's request.
12 Feb Abbie goes to infirmary.
17 Feb Abbie still in infirmary, Samantha is-.sick and goes to infirmary on 18th.
22 Feb Samantha out of infirmary.

28 Feb Doctor gives Samantha quinine and Dover powders and she goes back to infir-
mary. Adelaide comes to do her work (in Office).
1 Mar Abbie & Matilda still quite sick. Eldress Lydia goes to infirmary to take
Caroline ' s place .
3 Mar GMiller home from Illinois and begins "to attend the sick very faithfully."
Abbie fails and we ha)|ve but little hopes of her."
4 Mar They have to have someone stay at night with Abbie and Matilda.
