26 Feb "Elder Austin, Charles (Brackett) and Nehemiah (White) came ;and had a long
*interview with the father this morning and bound the children to Elder Austin,
I believe."
Jesse went to Albany and met 75 loads of ice from the Shaker pond and there
were eight teams on the pond when he came home. (They had finished hauling
ice for the Shaker families and were letting a Mr. Hall draw what he wanted.)
28 Feb Hall has 70 teams working on hauling ice.
3 March An agent for the Howe Sewing Machine came and looked at their machines but
"they were too old to be changed for anything."
5 March Lydia got 13 chair frames from Mt. Lebanon.
13 Mar. Sun We heard the Covenant read this morning. After the afternoon meeting
Adolphus Root, Barbara Huber "'(Hooper ?) and Julia McNelly signed the Covenant.
16 March "It looks like a storm but it was intended for a lot of men from the CF and
2d Order to go to the woods in Saratoga County where we have wood and a man
has a sawmill and we have \f the lumber. Benjamin Starks and John Tribl
came and started with the men from here., John Muddle has been in the vicinity
and he was to be the pilot. They eat breakfast at 5 a.m., expecting to be
home tonight. Wey sat up until 11 p.m. but they came not. It blowed and
snowed very hard."
17 Mar "A very cold tedious day. Much anxiety felt about the men that went after
the boards. Daniel and some of the men went down to the turnpike to break
out the road, it was very much drifted and the storm increases.... Our
hired men came home at 11:30 p.m. The wind blew so we ^ did not hear them
and they had nothing to eat since morning. They stayed at Tribes Hill with
a farmer who turned his cattle out of doors and took their teams in."
19 March Benjamin Hughes died at SF, very aged.
25 March Charlotte Youngs died, between 70-80 years.
31 March "Jesse and C. Miller went to Albany on A. Youngs' business about selling
the mill farm."
1 April John Muddle and family leave. He will work for Kerker.
2 April Henry Tribley moves into the house that Muddle had. Simeon Russ went to
Albany to meet his wife, childre^n and friends (including Jacob Male) who
have just arrived from England. He will live at the river farm.
21 April "Two officers came after a man that has been at; the SF some months. They
have six indictments against him. They took him as he came from dinner.

9 May C. Miller bought a clock from the Camps, made in 1807 by Benjamin Youngs, for
use in the Office.
11 May Two of hired men set out some young trees "on the highway between our land
and the 2ddFamily.
22 May Begin public meetings. Not many spectators. Albert Lomas spoke.
25 May Staunton Buckingham, Daniel Sherman, Ann Buckingham, Matilda Wells, Abbie
(Messenger) and Ruth Green start for visit at Groveland.
26 May Simeon Russ and Stephen Conway are busy shearing sheep - started 23d.
Plaiting broom corn on River Farm - 16 acres.
29 May A. Lomas hurt by a horse and unable tp speak at meeting so DABuckl^ngham

1 June Three of hired men leave at 3:30 a.m. to get lumber in Saratoga County.
Took their lunch with them, got home at 10:30 p.m.
2 June Little Theodore's father came and took him.
Ox teams and bout four hired men are down in the swamp trying to plow it.
Sometimes the oxen sink down to their bellies in the muck; other times it is
more than two teams can do to plow out the alder roots.
4 June Group returned from Groveland.
5 June Sun. Albert Lomas preached to the world's people. Also on June 12 & 19.
23 June Samantha (Bowie) went to the ministry shop to learn to make baskets of poplar
chip from Eldress Ann (Buckingham). Adelaide began to learn to make up work
baskets from Eliza Wells. Lydia is working some on her splint baskets.
13 July Eldress Sarah at 2d Order released and Aurelia to be eldress and Lucy Cox
to live with her.
19 July Two young men came this a.m., "bought some baskets and 14 pictures of the
Shakers about here."
21 July Lydia finished 3 doz. little baskets to go to Polly Lewis at Mt. Lebanon.
Sent them by the Ministry who had been at Watervliet.
23 July Jacob Male has done the hay mow^ing at home and Mark Male at the River Farm.
1 Aug Got $25-30 worth of cotton yarn #40 for the sisters neckerchiefs. Lucy
Fairchild is weaving some now and is anxious to have more.
3 Aug James Irving came with his wife and apparatus for picture taking. They had
dinner and supper.
7 Aug Sun "We heard reading this a.m. A common meeting this afternoon. Ibis evening
we commence having prayer meeting at 7:30. Lasted an:hour or more. All
the Believers in the land unite In the same gift at the same time."
9 Aug Hayden Treadway and his two sons came to see Almira. Had dinner and supper.
Before they left they went to the cottage: and had a visit alone-: with her.
10 Aug Polly Ostrander died. "She is quite in years, has lived at the 2d Order
for some years, she came from Albany with her husband and was one of so-
called little band."
16 Aug Jesse and Charles went to Starbuck Island for a large load of stramonium.
23 Aug Nehemiah went to Albany after a man and four children. We concluded to keep
the.children on tri^l. Boys are 12 and 14, girls 5 and 7.
2 Sept "A young woman came about supper time last night. She has been to Lebanon
and spent some 4 or 5 days. Wanted to be a Shaker but could not think of
confessing to a fellow being. She was drawn here and stayed till after
dinner. Then Catie & Mary walked with her to the SF and left her."
12 Sept Electa Thomas to live with Eldress Aurelia at NF.
14 Sept A woman named Betsy Miller, formerly lived at Hancock some 35 years ago,
walked here from Newtonville.
15 Sept "Betsy Miller stayed all day, visited around here and there."
16 Sept Jesse went to Albany and "Betsy Miller went home with him to our great joy."
23 Octt End of public meetings.
25 Nov Jesse's horse, Jack, "got cast in the stall last night" and Jesse and Ghauncey
both were hurt trying to get him up, but Jesse and Jack went to town again
today.
26 Nov They have been doing a great job "down north" taking the creek bank off and
drawing it back and filling up the hollows, plowing it deep and subsoiling.
12 Dec Lydia commenced making some pants, etc. "Samantha is stitching some leather
gaiters - a new kind for us to have."
15 Dec "Jesse took a load of brooms to the SF to bleach."
"Samantha has been to work on small needle books today. Lydia notched the
flannel in the evening..."
19 Dec Found the Hudson!.(River was still open and boat would leave for NYC in evening
so all made a rush to send things - 2d Family 3 loads of potatoes, GF 20 bbls
of thyme, etc.

5 Jan Something apparently wrong with door of Office and it was taken off and to
Freegift s shop to be repaired. Today it was very cold and Freegift came
and worked on the door outside. "It is a great job for a man between 85 and
90 but no one can do it so nice."
8 Jan "The father of little Lewis came last evening to see him, he stayed all
night and bound him to Nehemiah. He then visited a while and bid the boy
good by and he went back to Albany very much pleased that his little boy
had so good a home."
9 Jan "Fred Bisgrove, one of our hired men, drove so near the team of a man named
Noxon that he nearly broke one of his legs and hurt the other. He is not
very much of a teamster, probably did not turn out enough and the wheel went
onto the horse." Put the horse in the Office barn.
10 Jan Noxon came to see about his horse, if it was alive this morning. He left
word that if the leg was broken to have the horse killed but they did not
think but what it could be cured.
12 Jan C. Miller pays taxes for CF- over $1400.
21 Jan An Englishman came with his nephew thinking of leaving the young man.
Ephraim sent him to the SF but Brother Albert informed him they would take
no one until April.
25 Jan Noxon's horse died last night. "He was 21 years old and they think something
else set in."
