15 Oct Two women came from Rome with a little baby to have taken. They said it
was an orphan but we could not tell and "had no occasion for taking it."
23 The Shakers begin going to Albany without h a v i n g
to pay toll each time.
They have made arrangements to pay $9 each quarter for the 1st & 2d Orders.
26 Maria G i I let went to SF with Pauline to see her mother Ann White "who is
very sick & hardly expected to live."
30 Putting new floor in school; it is to be fixed entirely new inside.
I Nov Getting coal for the extract house; also use in garden shop.
3 CC, Clarissa & Abby go to Crescent trading. "They are selling off their goods
to move to Troy; consequently s e l l rather cheap."
4 Fourteen year old boy brought to be taken. His mother is sister to Lloyds,
carriage maker.
Hired men finish harvesting popcorn.
5 DS brings pipe stems from Schenectady.
6 FSW, Samuel Rose & 5 hired men went to fix the watering place between here
& Albany.
7 FSW, Samuel & 2 hired men finish the watering place for the present.
Have installed a coal stove in herb shop & now put one in "sisters' front room."
II CC & Justice go to Shirley. "All that gave or lent them money are to meet &
conclude what is best to be done with the factory as they are very much in
debt both to the work and Believers." (They return on 14th.)
17 James Starks was at the depot "drawing chips away to put on Niskayuna garden"
& train had pulled away from station & he was proceeding when the train backed
up, breaking his wagonR injuring one horse considerably.
24 Boys' school started - 50 students, DAB and Alex Youngs teachers.
I Dec Two sisters from each family come to clean the schoolhouse.
Elizabeth Train & Sylvester moving to NF, Cyrus coming to CF. Nehemiah to
take Sylvester's place as Deacon. Elizabeth Train will replace Electa in
charge of the girls.
Now drawing coal - a load for the school, a load for the dairy room, etc.
5 Take two Witbeck girls to see their father. It is not thought he can live
much longer. Left the girls but promised to pick them up in a day or so.
Sold NF's Howe sewing machine for $50 & bought a Singer for $136.25.
6 CC had very discouraging news; told them there was a great quantity of brooms
on the market & he had received orders for only 30 dozen.
8 Daniel get 12 barrels of flour from Waterford.
CC took his sleigh to get a cover made for it for his seed journey.
10 Daniel got 12 more barrels of flour from Waterford.
Haul some coal for SF.
II James Starks gets a load of coal for himself, "he is beginning to use coal
for his fami Iy."

1 Jan "The New Year has commenced without waiting to see if we were prepared."
CC & CM returned home while they were at breakfast.
6 CC & Cyrus start on long seed journey.
Daniel went to Schdy with large load of seed boxes to be shipped & Just made
it through the drifts.
8 "Very cold & blustery. None go out or come in except very urgent business."
10 50 doz, brooms taken to Schdy to be shipped to CC at Watertown.
12 Try again to get Derick Clute's scow out of river. Fail.
14 Finally get scow out.
18 Sun - 20
20 A number of brethren went in different directions to break roads. FSW goes
to Albany with Simon Smith & it took them 5 hours to get through by the Troy
Road. Jesse & Daniel went to break the Niskayuna Road.
21 FSW "has succeeded in getting Justice's case postponed."
22 Cold but it grew worse & worse. Maynard went to Albany after manure but upset
& "corked" one of his horses badly & the other scratched badly "so they are used
up for the present"; James Starks went to Albany after a load but had to
throw part of it off. James Langridge, who went with Starks, had to walk home.
Calvin Reynolds went after coal but had to leave his load in the road &
borrow a horse to ride home. Ministry sisters & brethren got as far as Gove's
(Loudonville Road) & their horses at Shepherd's and "it was utterly impossible
for them to go further."
23 30 below. CM, James Starks & other brethren started soon after breakfast to
get Ministry. Met them about 2 miles from Gove's with a neighbor digging thru
the snow. Took 7 brethren & 12 horses to get Ministry thru. They were as
comfortable as could be expected because El dress Betsey has been under a
doctor's care.
24 Continues cold. None can go from home & none can get here. Potatoes are
badly frozen in Office cellar. Yesterday while getting the Ministry, Elder
Amos froze his ears, Daniel part of his face, CM his nose, Maynard his cheek etc
2"? Continues cold. Clarissa (Vedder) getting worse Instead of better. (She
is one of the four or more sisters who live at the Office.)
28 50 hens stolen. Tracked to one of the German neighbors by the blood on the
snow. Fred got a constable to go search the house; found 36 of hens and
2 partly dressed. Went in evening & got hens.
29 Clarissa seemed better, the pain in her side is less. Had 2 Germans put in
jail for stealing hens.
30 About 4 a.m. Clarissa tried to get up. E !iza & Abby tried to help as she
could not help herself in the least. Called Daniel, Almerla & Lydia & they
tried to get her back in bed. "She was palsied in her left side, could not
use her leg or arm." CM & Jannet came, "battered her" but could not bring
her to. CM has been staying in Office at night so as to help raise her up,
If needed.
31 Jan Clarissa is no better. A great many come to see her. "All feel very bad
& feel that our mother is going to leave us or at least is nearly ruined for
this world. Everything seems gloomy."
1 Feb Clarissa nearly the same though she is apparently swelling. They gave her
Sun. physick, it began to work about 10 p.m. & continued thru the night.
2 Both of the Dr.Wades came to see Clarissa. A great deal of company to see
Clarissa. Jesse to sleep in Office to assist. Emeline Clark moving to CF.
Elder Sister & Betsy Hawkins watched.

4 Elizabeth Train & Hester came from NF to watch. Dr. Mulford visited her.

23 Clarissa is moved over to 2d House (infirmary) CM & CC carried her out &
put her in the sleigh.
"She said it was a pity it was not the other way, meaning the graveyard..."
24 Maria Reynolds & Calvin, her son, moved to NF from WF; also 3 little girls,
2, 9 and about 3.
"It seems very lonely not to see Clarissa, not even on the bed."
(Apparently those left in the Office are Elizabeth Ask, Elizabeth Seely,
Abby Messenger, Lydia Annas & Almira
26 Cyrus takes the boys.
27 Feb Abby & Lydla try to regulate some & set the house in order. Elizabeth Seely
went to stay with Clarissa - "she remains much the same, as helpless as ever
& it feels more tedious than it did at first."
28 Elizas/ells came to take Clarissa's place at the Office in case she should not
be able to return.
2 Mar Asa (Seaton) came with Galen Richmond. "He is b u y i n g
the Groat farm nearby &
wants to borrow some money but ours is al! gone or spoken for to pay our debts."
7 Clarissa is very restless. "She is in a great deal of pain and wants to be
gotten up & down often, which makes it hard for her & others too."
10 Both Dr. Wades to see Clarissa. "There are 24 horses on the place today."
18 Jusice & David Train (78 of SF), El/$abeth Train (62) and Azuba (61) Train
of CF go to Albany "to sign some written agreement in relation to the property
that they gave up for their brother Oliver. Mary wants to sell but cannot do
so untiI they s ign ."
NF and WF come to clean schoolhouse; have dinner at Office.
19 Move Clarissa into old Tailoress shop where Geo. Price had been putting up a
machine to raise Clarissa so sisters can do it & not be so dependent on brethren
Something broke the first time & let her fall which frightened her very much
besides jarring.. She seemsjbetter but no symptoms of returning life."
20 "CM & Daniel stropped at the WF on their way home. There was a dog there
that followed them home. They shut him up in the barn but he made such a
pitiful nfcise Daniel got up & let h i m out to whither he listeth . He took
possession of CM's wagon."
23 Bowman is to work the Camp farm this year.
25 DAB, BEtsy Harrison & Aurelia go to Lansingburg to get an orphan girl about
13 years old named Ada Curo.
26 Cyrus went to SF to get 2 boys.
"The family had spoon cakes for dinner."
27 Sally Taylor (85 of NF) was taken to Albany to get her pension money.
30 Daniel goes to Albany with witnesses to hen theft. Nehemiah & Philip drive
some cows to Albany to sell.
31 Men come to lay the foundation for NF new barn.
1 Apr General turnout of sisters & some of the brethren to rake the dooryard.
2 Boy brought from SF, says he has neither father nor mother. He eats &
sleeps with the men at present.
3 "CC goes to Schdy with Betsy Harrison & Abby after some children. Their
mother came with them last Saturday but the Elder Sisters were so busy they cou
not see them but they had so much feeling for them, they concluded to go after
them. Their father is dead.1'
One boy & 2 girls. FSW goes to Albany, brings home 2 boys & 1 girl. "So we
are like to have some children if nothing more."
4 "Jane Hudson released from all her troubles last night."
7 Mar Samantha.is 17 years old today.
8 Both Dr. Wades for dinner. Wade^r. had been to SF to see Eldress Paulina who
has erysipi ! as.
A woman came with a boy from across the river that someone had spoken about
to CC. He is about 10 & appears to be a smart boy."
11 Daniel Brainard (NF) goes to Albany with CC to sign over his land to the
Trustees .
FSW got a Watson sewing machine.

12 Sun Christopher (Talbot) came to tell them the Island house had been broken into
aga i n.
13 An inventory showed stolen were 2 feather beds, 5 pillows, blankets, towels,
all table cutlery. Think they have a clue to the thieves.
15 FSW & Daniel go over the river, get a constable and 5-6 search warrants, search
3-4 houses, think they found some bags that were on Island. Those they sus-
pected arejnamed Devvos (Devros) who have been trapping muskrats on Island.
16 Take Eunice and Lucy Fuller to Island to see how much was taken.
17 Elder Betsy goes to see Clarissa who feels she can never fill her place again
& resigns her place freely. "She has been truly one of the pillars in Mother's
house at this place. It w i l l
be 20 years in May since she went there to live."
18 Daniel & James Starks go tcJGrescent again. Decide to returnjbags & wait & see
what happens. "James has no doubt but what the bags are ours, but does>Vd i ke

Scotch lady, Mary Daniel, came with a boy about 10 that she wants taken & Elder
Bro. agrees to try him.
"Some officers came late tc(see if they could get track of some dogs."
20 Scotch woman had to stay all day, sewed some. Her boy has decided to stay.
22 Get scow in river.
Scotch woman goes back to Albany with CC.
23 CC & CM to Troy to see into the Godard case.
27 "CC goes to the Ministry Shop, hears something that feels very weighty to him.
Was there nearly 3 hours.
FSW goes to Lebanon to teach them about cutting out clothes.
2 "The story begins to go the rounds that Elder Brother Freegift is to be
released & CC is to take his place."
29 Elder Brother Freegift released; Chaifncey Copley to take his place; Chauncey
Miller is to be principal trustee ; Channing coming to Office to be a Trustee
to remain about home.
30 Elder Brother Freegift "bestows his mantle of love & blessing on CC & he is
annointed & appointed Elder Brother. He feels it in earnest & is all broken
to pieces. He has the approbation of all or nearly so, is the choice of the
people. "
1 May CC gives up his horse^ then goes to Island on foot, splices the rope, etc.
2 "CC takes his place at the head of the table this noon with a heavy heart, I
dare say." Ministry attended meeting, "we had a very good one. All seemed
to try to help Elder Brother; he went all around among the brethren & sisters

14 A woman with an infant about 6 weeks old walked from Albany in rain with a
carpet bag. We kept her all night,
16 Woman & child go to SF.
18 "The Elders begin cleaftning the two front rooms, whitewashing etc. They are
intending to move in there to live."
21 Island covered with water.
23 CF go to public meeting. Abtel Hathaway spoke to spectators.
26 Ephraim (Prentiss of CF) & Shubel (Prentiss of WF) go to Albany to take
lessons in dentistry. "There is liberty for all to have false teeth that
need them."
28 Edward Owen came to show Ephraim some about teeth. He extracted 17 teeth &
rootsffrom sisters. Has shown Ephraim suitable tools, etc.
A woman came with her grandson to have him taken. She also has 2 girls. The
Elders told her she might bring them all so the boy returned with her.
29 Gordon HOrton (655 left NF and CM went to settle with him. He behaved very
well & did not ask as much as they gave him. He Intends to go to Wisconsin
where one of his sons lives.
John Decker goes to Dr. March about his feet--told it was rheumatism.
30 Daniel came home from the Island. Said "a man came down the river drowned
yesterday. As yet they didjnot know who he was or where he came from. Got
the coroner. There was $11 in his pocket & a bottle of whiskey.
1 June Apple trees in full bloom.
Maynard, Eunice & Catherine go tofrhe River Farm in p.m. & try to get wheat
pi anted.
2 June Elder Brother, CM & FSW drew^larissa to the Office & she stayed all day &
seemed to enjoy it.
5 DAB goes to Albany to see Dr. March about his eyes -- "there appears to be
something forming over his eyes,"
9 Clarissa is taken to NF to stay a few days.
17 Stephen Wells (of SF) came & Emeline Clark went home with him to see if she
could get over being homesick for SF,
18 Ministry Elders & Trustees have meeting regarding George Price getting
patent for his "butter squasher,"
23 FSW went to Albany to see the Drs. Swinburne & Hon to get their advice in
regard to Elder Sister Abigail. There seems to be an enlargement of something
next to the heart.
24 ARchibald McClure came about noon, hoped we would not be alarmed and think we
were being taken by storm but there was quite a company coming for dinner
(21 besides the babies). "We did t newest we could under the circumstances."
He brought 5-6 quarts of nice ripe strawberries.
25 SB took the older sisters in the nice covered wagon for a ride & to Albany

take care of the others if needed.
1 July Some of the neighbors come to see Clarissa. She had gone for a short ride on
the Sabbath, they saw her & now they brought her some things they thought

4 EldenJBrother & DA8 are putting a partition in the mill to give DAB a place to
do printing.
WhflMe the familyjwas in their evening meeting, Clarissa had another stroke.
Jannet was the only one with her & thought she was dead but she came to & remain
in great distress thru the night. Azuba Train quite low but can help herself.
Clarissa could not speak though she tried very hard.
8 Sylvester & Richard Dean came from NF with Emily Curtis. "She is bound to
Richard & they hardly know what to do with her as her parents are not in Albany.
They give her half-sister $1.00 to keep her until Friday.
Azuba Train died.^ Has not been able to eat for 2 weeks. "She felt quite
comfortable, did not want but little done nor did not want to see but few."
9 Azuba's sister, Lydia Culver, came with her husband, children & grandchildren
(6 in all) just at the comencement "of retiring time." Had not heard Azuba was
ill so it was a great shock but they were invited into the funeral & saw the
corpse & went to the grave. Elizabeth Train came & saw them & they went to WF
& saw David Train.
Ann Lowe died at W
10 Channing got a place for Emily Curtis in Albany with George Young to stay for
the present.
14 Clarissa "was released from all her earthly sufferings" about 5 p.m. ^V
15 July SB went to River^arm to get Jesse & Lydia for thejfunera I . Had not planned
Wed to have funeral unti IjThursday but corpse began to smell.
16 Cyrus Bates went to Cohoes & took one of his boys that has been here a few
weeks but does not "appear to be as bright as common."
20 People from Albany came, left their horses beforefhhe door; the horses ran
off into the village, turned & ran up against the Ministry Shop steps & broke
railing & steps, broke the wagon tongue, Georgeljnended thejwagon tongue so they
could get home. They paid $9.
22 Lewis Clark & his wife,Sally, arrived from St. Louis. Did not like it that
Emeline was at CF. Clark girls wanted to go to their mother & they left about
5 p.m. to walk to ra i I roadjdepot,so left their carpet bags here. (Sally was
not their mother because Lewis & Sally stayed on at the Shakers.)
24 Lewis & Sally went to WF to visit.
27 PAB and Lydia worked on baskets "in Ann's shop."
28 Lydia worked at Ann's shop most of the day; "Ann wove on her tape."
30 Ann & Lydia "went to wash house to work on some draw baskets, butting &
pasting & putting some together."
9 Aug (Sun) We had the Covenant read in morning meeting.
3 Lucy Fuller & some of the kitchen sisters went down to the Island & picked
a mess of peas for the family. Got home about 9 p.m.
4 Lydia worked at Ann ! sshop most of the day; Ann wove on her tape.
6 "Cyrus & his boys went to the river ' for a little releasing. 1 "
PAB worked in the ironing room cutting out baskets.
10 Lydia began "braiding small baskets to put on the draw baskets."
12 A woman came on foot from Albany with a baby in her arms & her 13-year old
daughter, Lucinda Wood, whom she wanted to leave. Elder Sister decided to
try her for a while. "Mother seemed very pleased; she has her second husband."
15 Finished haying at River Farm - 141 loads in 5 weeks.
25 Elizabeth Seely & Ann Buckingham went to NF to help sisters prepare food for
Tues all who are helping with their barn raising. "Some of the best hands from
each fami Iy help."
26 All the brethren in the Society that could went to the NF to help with the
raising. Elizabeth & PAB were the only sisters who went to help.
Ada Currin to the White's from whence she came.
27 Phebe Freeman & Fanny MarkwelI ran away. DAB & John Decker went in pursuit

28 Phebe & Fanny spend the day with Betsy Hawkins.
29 FSW & Elder Sister take Julia Ann Warren, Phebe Freeman & Fanny MarkwelI to
Albany to their parents or some relatives. Brought back Lucinda Wood's sister
& brother.
31 Aug DAB went to Waterford with Justice to see a woman that doctors eyes. Ellen
Ward of WF went also. (He and Ellen continued to go almost d a i l yexcept
the Sabbath for the next couple of months, alternating the driving.)
3 Sept Use the new drying house for the first time to dry apples.
4 Last day of school - have kept it for 95 days.
8 CPrentiss started for Watertown to measure a boat load of lumber for the
NF barn or washouse. CC ordered it last winter & paid $200 towards it.
9 Martha Bates received a letter that "Or in Bates, the old man, was dead & her
children desired her to come immediately. So this morning Martha, Irena,
Lucy & Cyrus went & Stanton took them to the depot. (Returned Oct. 15.)
10 Eldress BEtsy & Eliza went to the WF "and found plenty of trouble there."

ran away. Fred & Maynard looked for him but decided he had
gone to his mother & gave up.
14 Calvin Reynolds left this morning, did not take any of his things.
About noon James Shook, Lyman Quackenbush & James Macinally ran away. "James
Shook came back quite penitent with a lie in his mouth. They let him stay
all night but concluded it was no use to keep h i m . "
20 When daylight came, Calvin Reynolds appeared & wanted to return to the fold.
Sun. Elder Amos came & spent an hour with h i m .
21 Calvin went back to NF. Ministry seemed to think his week's experience would
do him good.
Sarah Jane Baker came to the Office to stay all night.
22 Jesse took the Ministry's horses & "the covered ark" & took all the little
boys out for a ride. They had a fine time.
SB took Sarah Jane to Lans i ngburgh . "Henry White went on the cars but did
not get there as soon as she did."
23 Adelaide & Sarah Ann Wood go to the eye doctor with DAB & El I en.
28 FSW went to Albany "to make arrangements about Justice's case and his horses
ran away & hurt a man."
2 Oct Justice's case is postponed.
3 "Mary Train is at the WF & wants to finish her days there & the Ministry
gave her liberty. She claims she went to take care of her father & brother
Oliver who was insane. .a considerable part of the time. He is now dead &
she is released from him, she wants Believers to take all her property, etc."
7 Elder Brother began making preparations for painting the schoolhouse. Put
up scaffold.
8 Elder Issachar, Jesse Wells & Jeremiah Lowe are painting & pointing the brick.
Have dinner at CF Office.
15 Elder Brother CC & 3 of family now finish painting schoolhouse for 3d time.
16 Deaconesses are cutting pumpkint to day as it is too wet to gather apples as
they have been for the last couple of weeks.
17 Oct "A woman about 24 years of age came with an infant 3 months old. She married
a man by name of Fay. He has taken another girl & gone to California & all
the money this one had. She has lived at Saratoga, as the story goes."
19 FSW goes to Hancock to set up a Watson Sewing Machine for them.
21 Sisters a l l turn out to pick up cider apples & 4-5 brethren helped. Sundown
when they finished.
Brethren are unloading (umber from a canal boat. Some is basswood for broom
handles, some pine for new washhouse "when the sign comes right."
22 "A crazy man came after dark. We put him in the ' Iinter chamber.' This
morning CM had a hard time to get rid of him. He used the worst of language...
& did not eat anything.
Elder Brother & 2 brethren painted schoolhouse for' 4th time.
24 CM made arrangements for John Arkwell, the miller at Vischers Ferry, to get
the wheat coming from the farm in Illinois from the canal & grind it for 70
a bushel.
Took onions to NF to be buried (only 115 bushels).
27 Island under water. Water in barn is 22 inches deep so cow was found standing
Tues with water on her udder. Some of the neighbors helped & they got the cow up
on a platform in the woodhouse; took large pigs to Witbecks, put small ones
overhead in the shanties.
28 Found water hard risen only about 1 inch more so sent Chris (Talbot), Mary
(his wife), and Betsy (daughter), who had been watching all the night before,
home to sleep. Began to go down about 11 p.m.
30 Two brethren went to Van Schaick's Island for seed of evergreen sweet corn.

3 Nehemiah White went to Lansingburgh to "notify his folks of Abigail's death."
Two of her daughters came to the funeral.
4 Ministry "gave liberty" for Benjamin Hughes' to be taken back on trial.
5 Lucy Fuller fell down the cellarway in drying house & hurt herself; was
Thurs there some time before she could get breath enough to get out.
Gift received in evening meeting that there is to be general opening on Sab.
13 We had 20 men & children come to our back door to get something to eat in
the afternoon.
14 FSW, Elizabeth Harrison & E!izabethksk brought home from Albany a girl 15
years old named Margaret Easterly.
Mionistry speak of Sarah Dean coming here to live.
17 "C.-Mi Her communed with Elder Brother some time & tendered his resignation."
18 CM went to Ministry before breakfast. After quite a spell, he went to
Albany. (Guess his resignation was not accepted.)
"Hosea Fuller came here to finish his days. Has been at SF 4-5 years."
"A young man about 21 came here to live. Has been at SF only a few weeks.
Elder Issachar gave him a good recommendation considering the length of time
he has been there. His name is George (Ashbury?)."
21 Nov Jesse went to A l b a n y to
get Sarah Dean's baggage "as she is to make her
home in this family." On the way backa, a wheel came off the wagon, Sarah
& Polly Reed had minor injuries but Elder Sister Eliza Sharp had both bones
in her leg broken below the knee.
23 Wheat arrived from Illinois - 1200 bushels. Seems very nice. Plan to have

18 fowls stolen from CF & not missed until Wednesday when a woman confessed
her husband had taken them.
27 Into Albany & got a constable & search warrant & went to home of George
Dunford to look for things one of the boys in the Children's Order said he
had given George. Found a hand cart, 1/2 of an old cheese, one run of grey
wool yarn, an ax, a hatchet, a hammer, etc. "George pretended he did not
know it was wrong, etc." Taken to Albany and, if CM had not put up his
bail, he would have been sent to jail to await arraignment.
28 Brought 20 bbis. of flour from the mill at Vischers Ferry but the river was
so low they could not get the scow to shore but had to unload one barrel
at a time into the skiff.
30 George Dunford came to see CM, "seemed to be rather ignorant of his situ-
ation... trying to justify himself...he did not go away feeling much better."
2 Dec Theodore Humphrey & some friends came, had lunch & bought $2 worth in the
store, "which is something in these days."
3 Took 20 doz. brooms to Schenectady to ship to Watertown. "Quite an order
for these hard times."
5 "A young woman named Sarah Percy came on foot from Albany, said she wanted
to live with us & Eliza sent her to SF.
8 Daniel went to Albany to get "skimmings for feed," bought 82 bushes, 20 per
bushel. (Could be skimmings from a vat of beer.)
10 Dr.Wade Sr. came to plead for Geo. Dunford "on behalf of George's wife, Jane,
who is very feeble."
15 Pond drained, great quantity of fish, mostly bullheads.
Dr. Wade came with Geo. Dunford. CC, FSW & FW were present "but he persis-
ted in his innocence or that he meant no harm. He did not seem to be peni-
tent. Some of the neighbors are very anxious to have Geo. released."
16 Jane Dunford came with her daughter.,about 4 p.m. Persisted in saying that
"she thought Ruth had sent her the cheese but as she never sent a thanks back
to Ruth it looks pretty dark on her side."
Sold $8 of bulIheads.
17 Freegift, after talking to Dr. Wade Sr. & one of the Strongs, "has got up
a short writing for George to sign confessing his built etc. It is to be
read in their meeting or class, as they call it, & that is to end the
Dunford case."
18 Strong came & said that George had signed the writing and it is to be read.
23 Man from Albany brought his grandson to^be taken. Boy's name is George Scott,
15 years old, & "to all appearances as bright as common," & decided to take hirr
