14 Aaug Sister Betsy came to the Office & helped divide the "white s i l k tem-Jker-
chiefs" made at South Union for the CF here and some for Lebanon.
17 Have been out gathering fleabane, lobelia & boneset.
19 "The plains have been burning all week." (Has been exceedingly dry, no
ra i n . )
21 Men began digging to fix the waterworks on the hill. "The intention is to
lower the aqueduct thru the hill."
23 Fire alarm before breakfast. Their east woods were on fire. Have to
watch day & night as the fire burns underground and breaks out in new
places. "A dreadful day, the oldest do not remember ever witnessing such
a time."
24 All the boys and brethren turned out & some stayed all night. All Shaker
buildings in danger if w i n dshifts. At meeting time, 4 brethren & all the
sisters assembled in the dooryard & prayed for rain.
25 Brethren and hired men work very hard - nothing but rain/ it seems, can
stop the fire.
26 "Beautiful little shower" in a.m. and another inJevening.
27 The brethren had worked so hard, Elder Brother omitted morning meeting
Sun. & brethren had a chance to rest.
28 Begin harvesting broom corn. Caroline (Downs) & Aurelia to Island to cook.
12-13 hired men have gone there, Office has 26 for breakafast besides some who
ate outdoors.
30 CM, Jannet & Matilda went after elderberries to make a barrel of wine.
31 While the 2d Order was in meeting, William Earl, Charlotte & Henrietta
Pierce left.
2 Sept 2d Order took Julia to her sister in Troy and Cyrus took the Pierce chil-
dren's clothes to their parents.
Tom Wa I degiven notice to leave the farm & house by April.
3 "It being time for our singers to go to the 2d Order, 5 brethren & 5 sisters
went in the forenoon, had quite a good time of it. There was no morning
meeting; the Elders saw some .of the young brethren & sisters each in their
apartments . "

16 Sept CM went to West Troy & got "a load of jugs & pots, a II imperfect and
less than 1/2 price."
20 Sophroni a/chose to leave & she was taken to Albany & put on the boat.for NYC.

23 Staying all night in the Office, they had: Wright & his wife from NYC who

came to spend Sabbath with Shakers; and a man named Brainard.
24 John Decker went at 5 a.m. to get constables & a squire. "WE have been very
Sun. much annoyed of late with gunners on the Sabbath. They thought they would
take them up & see if if would not do some good... There was a number taken
up, one paid 137, the rest gave boil, some left their guns, etc."
25 John Decker-went to the Island to take charge of harvesting the popcorn;

the corn stalks and all are then to husk at home in the evening.
26 Ann Durham left to live with her mother & was put "on the cars" with her

29 CC & CM to Schenectady to see about a farm for sale. A lady from Albany
bought 14 pr. socks; man affrom Argyle brought roots & herbs & was paid $10.
30 Frederick went to Albany to make arrangements about the squire & constables
Sat. coming out again tomorrow.
1 Oct "They took up quite a number for stealing and shooting."
4 Caroline Cook wanted to leave so she was taken to Albany and put on the cars.

15 Abigail Lemon "struck with a stroke of palsy" on Friday & still unable to

23 Two men named Philip came & "engaged the farm Tom has formerly had."
25 Caroline Vernoy let: it be known she was ready to leave. Accordingly, CM,
Elder Sister & AM accompanied her to Albany & left her with her sister.
26 Judge B u l lcame from Troy to see the Treadways about signing off some land
belonging to their father in Illinois but they did not sign.
27 Marinus Fa i rch i I d& family, 8 in all, came about 10 p.m.
28 Marinus Fairchild had supper at NF but stays at CF Office overnight.
Office has had 13 hired men to feed for the last 2 weeks.
14 Jan Mrs. Treadwel I comes from Albany & buys \\. of applesauce & some
other things in the store.

28 Took 104 Ibs. of palm leaf to SF - CM had bought it for them. They paid for

30 Eliza Wells back in Office again, "we are glad."
31 Load of brooms & some seeds shipped to Gouverneur.
Matilda Wells & Abby Messenger cut out some table mats for sale. "There
is now & then a ca I Ifor them."
1 Feb FSW taken sick again, "not much hope for him."
5 A young man named Bradbury Merrill came, "says he has been living at church
in Canterbury. Finally admitted he had left the Believers in pursuit of a
new home somewhere." ,
6 Daniel Sherman went after Dr. Wade for FSw7^"About noon his spirit took
its departure from this world of sorrow & trouble."
8 Frederick Evans came from New Lebanon to preach sermon at FSW's funeral.

steam engine to wash with. "We are trying to find the best way of washing."
25 Mar CM made some measures & calculations about the washhouse.
28 CC, Jesse, CM & DS went to Pleasant Hill to make arrangements about
building a house on the farm.
7 April Received an express order for bonnets. Send messenger to NF.
8 Sisters of NF brought 22 doz. bonnets for sale.
13 Adelaide ingham taken to Dr. March & had something cut out of her mouth.
Chris Talbot & his family moved on to the Island.
18 Masons come to lath & plaster washhouse.
19 "A Dutch woman came to help rake the dooryard & lane by the Office."
21 "CM plowed in the medical garden."
22 The sisters are very much engaged in making bonnets for sale. "There is
a great call for them."
25 PAB began knitting "black silk nets" for sale.
26 "John Jack has gone on a journey of his own contriving., not expected
to return."
28 A German woman came here from beyond Vischers Ferry who wanted two boys
taken.
29 "Old Charley, the white horse, takes his exit from this world of trouble;
Maynard sees that he is buried decently, his age is about 24 years."
30 Some of the brethren went after the two German boys.
2 May School opened - 52 students. (These would have been all girls.)
16 A woman came here with a I ittlejjshe wanted us to take. We did. She is
from Cohoes.
20 "C. Prentiss had a large table made for the back door. I painted it."
A. Messenger & Lucy Bates cleaned & oiled the kitchen floors.
21 (Sat) Last night we had quite a parcel of shirts & shifts & other things stolen
out of the dooryard.
23 ChrisfTalbot came to turn broom handles. We have 17 hired men.
26 Patty, James & Wm.Bates came to see Lucy; they a I I went to the SF to see
Irena Bates. "Something concerning some property which belongs to them."
27 "Masons went to the Island to under pin the barn. They have raised the
barn higher on account of the water coming into it when the river rises."
"There is no peace to the wind today but blow, blow."
30 CM & DS went to Schenectady in search of Dick who has strayed away from
home or been stolen.
Some of the neighbors came with Dick before the brethren got home.
31 May A women & her two children came & want to be taken. Stay over night,
return in the morning."
2 June "I go to the 2d House to stay a few days where I can have some kind
soothing words said to me."
6 "[ return to the Office again. Distressing times I find; some with rivers
in their back & some with the crick in their back."

12 (Sun) Public meeting, female speaking, nearly 800 spectators.
"The afternoon workship the Ministry & visitors (from Groveland) had with
the whole church (family). We have a good meeting as far as anything that
I know, while I am selling in the Office & writing."

20 "A stormy night. Quite late a woman & two boys came & wanted to stay all
night & was as cross as a bear. Stayed until 9 a.m. next day. it took us
all to get ri d of her."
30 "Everyone busy trying to do all the good they can in their line of business;
there is plenty to do everywhere."
1 July CM, Moriah G i l let& Eliza Ask take railroad to NYC "where they expect to
stay a while for Eliza's health." (Returned July 8.)
5 CP, Abby Messenger & PAB went to Albany to get some plates & pitchers &
had dinner at Owens.
6 Nancy Hawley (a visitor) is teaching PAB how to make some baskets covered
with leather.
8 Nancy continues to work on the baskets; "I do as much as to look at her
now & then."
"A load of immigrants stayed by the pond last night."
13 Sarah Tfc^ame to color back with Elizabeth Seely.
"There is a plenty for everyone to do. I put up some more currants, both
wh ite & red."
17 Hard thunderstorm did damage at SF - took roof off one building & one of
chimneys of dwelling house.
18 CM went to see Baumes about the house he is b u i l d i n g .

ride along for a little ride & they went by "the new tavern that has been
erected lately near Newton's Corners."
28 PAB has been "outside garments to wear."
30 They have drawn 23-24 loads of wheat into the barn; there has been almost
300 loads of hay cut & drawn from the River Farm, Island & old homestead.
11 Aug Francis Goodrich died.

Bates & Elizabeth Youngs went to Saratoga Springs. (Returned Aug. 18.)

20 Brother David Parker with Sisters Dorothy Durgin & Mary Whitcher came to
visit from Canterbury on way to Groveland & Niagara Falls.
23 Today Sisters Dorothy & Mary go to Saratoga & Moriah Treadway & Ruth Green
go with them. (Back on Aug. 25, & others go on their journey.)
27 CM went to Albany & took "the old ark" for Bicnell"to go to camp meeting
with."
One of their horses "about 3 p.m. took its exit from this world of trouble."
29 The brethren begin to move the extract house against the washhouse.
31 People from Schenectady with a 14 year-old boy they wanted taken. He
went to SF.
3 Sept Mary & Caty Nelson & a cousin Elizabeth, came to see their sister Josephine.

A young woman & child came to join & went sent to SF.

20 CP is quite unwell, unable to do anything at present.

24 Lebanon Ministry & visitors both leave.
26 "CP is quite bright this morning, walks around the house, went down to
breakfast, ate with kitchen sisters, went in the front room, sat & conversed
a while more than common for him. He then got Henry B. to take him to the
NF. He there was taken worse, & in the evening we heard that they thought
heWould die. He continued in distress till about 10 p.m. when his spirit
took its f l i g h t
to a better world than this, where pain & sorrow cannot come."
28 Sept "At 3 p.m. both families came together to attend the funeral of CP. A
load of brethren & sisters from WF came to the funeral. Have a good
funeral, considerable speaking by the Elders & some others."
29 "A nigger & wench & their family, 5 in all, stayed in the shed last night,

30 A young woman brought her brother James, 12 years old, for us to take &

2 Nov Geo. Price went to Albany & brought home the new wash mill made at
Canterbury.
8 A girl came here wishing to stay with us; we took her on trial . Her
name is Josephine Orcutt. M^a.,
15 A man came here from Troy after religion. He stayed over night, then went
to SF.
16 A man came here by the name of Duane from Schenectady. He wanted to make
a trial with a new plough. He stayed a day or so, did not make out much
with his plough.
17 The new washhouse gets along very slowly.

has taken its flight for a better world than this."
24 Thanksgiving. The CF and NF & a I I the families attend meeting in the MF,
"had a long & good meeting." PAB stayed in the washhouse to work, as there
was need of it to keep the work going on (processing the meat).
2 Dec (Fri) Brethren trying very hard to get washhouse ready to wash inpy next
Monday or the Monday after.
5 "AM hands continue working on the washhouse; great many things to be
done., more than we are aware of."
6 CM takes upon himself the job of burning out the Office chimneys.
8 Got scow out of river., also took out Winne's.
9 Three brethren drew 10 tons of coal from Albany.
11 (Sun) Snow, cold & windy. No kind of meeting today. "We all have the privilege

13 Sistere finally wash in the new .washhouse. "The washing goes exceeding
well, everything works as well as can be expected for first time."

with her; Mary Nelson & Elizabeth come to CF from SF to live; Harriet
Hutchinson goes fromSF to NF. Little Pauline went to SF to live with

22 "I prepared the lamp for burning coal oil, a new thing for us at the Office."
25 "Today called Christmas we try to keep the best way we can The good
Ministry attend our morning meeting; we have a good substantial meeting;
some good sound doctrine if well lived up to."
26 CM went to the Ministry Shop to conclude about setting off the NF.
27 DAB printed some numbers to put in the bonnets.

28 The brethren & hired men work on the road again today, cold working.
"All the head members (CC, DAB, Jesse Harwood, CM) are doing head work
very briskly. They are trying to divide the CF and 2d Order (NF)."

31 Trustees go to divide some woodland between us & the SF. "I understand
that Jesse Harwood will live at NF to be the Trustee & Thomas Seal of SF
will I i vewit h h im & be Farmer Deacon. Sylvester Prentiss is to move
back to CF & take Jesse's place in Deacons' room.
