2 Feb Took donation to Albany for Sanitary Commission. ChF had three loads of 4 doz. cans
apple butter 78 barrels potatoes, 1 barreldried apples.

6 Feb A very short girlnamed Minnie Jackson, about 16, came from Troy "to get a home. We
gave her some dinner and sent her to SF."

10 Feb Both Dr. Wades came to see Brother Abram who is failing. "The sore on his head and
neck smells very bad."

11 Feb Woman came from Troy and brought her boy, Jesse Airs, to stay.
Four brothers and some hired men are getting out ice. The neighbors are also drawing
ice and also the Storks.
"A woman came on foot from Albany, called herself Robinson, said she came from Kansas
and told wonderful things she had seen of the war. Went to the SF."

12 Feb Two women came to get a boy taken named Jackson. His two sisters are atthe SF.

15 Feb Eva Shufelt is takento her mother inSchenectady. "She has been discontented for a
while. " Also took Louisa White to her sisterin Troy.

17 Feb Elder Peter Long went to SF to see Jerusha Truair about some money her brother had willed
her in Elder Peter's care.

19 Feb A woman came and brought a girl to be taken "but the word now is takeno more girls
but send them to the SF and we did so, but they refused and the 2d Family took her."

24 Feb Took little Anna Lake to her mother Ellen at the SF. Ellen is leaving. The child cried
and begged not to go*
Stephen Wells' funeral. Four brethren and five sisters went to the 2d Family for it.
Brother Joseph spoke quite lengthy and feelingly.

7 Mar "Two young men came from the Oneida Community to make some inquiries respecting the
way we hold our property, etc."
James Watkins died March 5th at WF, funeral today and ten of ChF brethren and sisters
attend.

9 Mar Abraham Hendrickson died after being confined 10-11 weeks with carbuncles on his head
and neck.

10 Mar Brother Abram's funeral. "We had a very good funeral; many spoke of his virtues. "
Jesse Airs ran away to his mother in Troy.

15 Mar Lucius Southwick in Albany regarding a billpending in Legislature to collect damages
done by the (car ?)

17 Mar Brought home from Albany the things that were not sold at the Fair, namely herbs, canned
fruit, I'mament and two small skins.
"A company of ladies came to see the Shakers, came up from NY last evening on the 1st
trip of the new boat called "St. John's. "
A! I the men (+ the hired hands) are now cutting wood and El izabeth Seely and Lydia are
making baskets whenever they can.

22 Mar Finish sawing wood - 11 days - 432 loads drawn by one yoke of oxen.

23 Mar Man named Yearsley came with his wife and child to have their teeth fixed. They had
dinner and Ephraim spent most of the day with them.

29 Mar Brought Carhart, wife and child from Watervliet Centre and went on to Albany to have him
sign over the deed of his house and little shop with two acres of land to the Trustees.
C. Miller has bought and paid $1000 for it. Itis to be rented to Edward Collins at present.

2 Apr Brought out from Albany a range to put in Office kitchen, also 3 chests ofJapan tea.
The Airs woman brought back her boy.

4 Apr Began taking down ovens and arches in cook room at Office and brought man named Russ
from Albany to put up the new range.

6 Apr Take Russ to Albany and go to Schenectady to get Fairchild, the mason, to do his part
of setting up the new range.

7 Apr John Putman is putting up a I ittle
partition in cook room so "confusion and dirt Is theorder
of the day. Hired men and ail the resthave to eat where they do the cooking but the
weather is good and the things can stand all around out doors."

8 Apr Wm. Lyons' grandmother came with a woman to see if they would take the woman's two
daughters. N. White went over to the 2d Order with them and 2d Order has agreed to
take them on trial. She and her husband are parted.

9 Apr Fairchild finished inside work before noon7 Putman shingled the door cap. Fairchild mended
the plaster and plastered the ministry back house in the afternooh.

11 Apr Had a fire in the new range and baked a pie.

12 Apr Scoured up brickwork around range, painted, cleaned.

14 Apr "John Putman came to frame an addition to the I itfle shop bought of
Carhart forCol I ins to
work in this summer. He is to frame it to the frnilL"
"The afternoon we spent moving stoves and pipes back and forth out of'doors and In again,
blacking stoves, pipes and faces and we were all glad when night came to close the day's

16 Apr "Phebe Ann has taken the kitchen again and things begin to look a I ittle better. "

22 Apr Elizabeth Seeley and Lydia went to Albany to buy some dry goods. 'Everything is shocking
high. Cloth that could be bought for8-9
5 May Chauncy Miller Jr., 7 years old, came from Albany with C.M .Sylvester and Ephraim
setting out a willow fence at River Farm.

9 May "A beautiful day. The willows smell,delicious and the grass is beautiful lygreen. "

the firstgiftin the Elder & Deacon line; Sylvester Prentiss goingto the 2d Order and Jesse
(Harwood) coming to the Office.

19 May Sylvester goes to the river and Island the same as ever, trying to get the crops in. Elder
C.C. takes his things over to the 2d Order in afternoon and Elder David came here.
Charles Brackett goes into the Elders 1 lot withElder DABuckingham. Jesse came to the
Office to sleep this night.

20 May Caroline & Jannett go to River Farm to clean the house or little shopSylvester used to
make it ready forJesse.

25 May Have two sisters visiting from Enfield, NH and now the Ohio Ministry arrive.
Samuel Ingham came to see his mother and sister.

28 May Elder Aaron tf Ohio Min.) is quite unwell and Eldress Naomi has two teeth extracted
(by Ephraim), one in a.m., one in p.m. so she feels "a little out of sorts but
keeps up
firstrate."

31 May John Decker is going to 2d Family to live in Office with Alexander Youngs.

11 June Hired shearers finish the 250 sheep - over 1400 Ibs. unwashed wool.

14 June Six visitors fromNew Lebanon arrive. Stay until June 21 .

16 June Eliza Tracy came to see her little boy.
Take visitors to Cohoes, Waterford, Lansingburgh, East and West Troy.

23 June A little girl, about8 or 9, named Idah Fenn, brought by her mother.

24 June A boy of Galusha's was kicked by a horse, had his wounds dressed by Jannet.

4 July Thos. Almond's mother in a group of six came to spend the day and have dinner; some of
Phebe Smith's relatives from Troy (5) came to spend the day and have dinner & supper;
Elizabeth Harrison's niece and husband, John & Mary Ann Archer, are still here, as are
Polly and Nancy Owen. (These people all have to be fed by the Office Sisters.)

5 July C. Miller, when taking Polly, Nancy and Archers to Albany, was almost capsized by a
span of runaway horses attached to a heavy lumber wagon.

9 July Benjamin Chick came to assist in making curant jelly. He is to be the main hand in
canning this year.

11 July Begin to pick peas - 24 barrels.

15 July Ministry from Canterbury arrive.
Severe drought; peas and berries very poor. Everything parched and would burn like tinder.

21 July Take Canterbury guests to Albany depot. "Our ministry startfor Holy Mount to rejoice
with their own people that know how to worship the Lord."

22 July Daniel took Adelaide and Samantha to the river "for a let out."
Fri. Eliz. Seely and Lucy have a bee making table mats. They make 25 sets since Tuesday.
Watching the grass fire gettingnear the 60 acre lot.

23 July "Dry, dry, dry, fires all around us. The air is full
of smoke. Sun and moon look like
blood so the Scriptures are fulfilled. Brethren are out watching and subduing fire and if
we do not get our buildings on fire in these perilous times we shallhave something to be
thankful for."
Lydia has braided 2 dozen splint fans this week.

25 July Ida Fenn's mother came to see her and the little girl
wanted to leave with her and did.

26 July A littlerain- enough to wet roofs.

27 July Talcott from the institutein Rhode Island came and stayed all night.

28 July Some of the Van Rensselaers came out, bought a few things in the store.

1 Aug Jesse and Charles went to Troy., carried a load of roots and herbs tothe clairvoyant,
Doctor Entwistle.

2 Aug Harvey Anthony, one of our boys, went away this morning.

3 Aug It has been a rainy day, the greatest blessing at this time we could have or ask for.
Everything manifests thankfulness for it- beasts and birds as well as vegetation and man-
kind aboeve all things else, for we cannot subsist without the land (which) brings forth
wherewithal I for us to eat.

4 Aug This is the day the President has appointed fora day of humiliation and prayer. Many notice
and keep the day. We note in our evening meeting; humble ourselves in prayer and sing
songs adapted to our state and condition.

5 Aug A man came with a young woman to see and be seen. He had a very small Mexican pony
that attracted considerable notice.
Catherine has been cutting the "doubters" out of palm Ieaf4 in the shed this week, Julia
has sized the same.

6 Aug Jesse Wells was here to dinner, a remarkable occurance. (He is always on the road to
Sat. Schenectady, West Troy, etc.)

9 Aug After we had retired a man with horse & wagon came to stay all night, said he was from
Ohio and a traveling agent for some paper. C. Miller arose and cared for him & his horse.

11 Aug Benjamin Chick came to can string beans and Lydia helped - 56 doz. " Hope they will
keep; the peas have all gone over the dam."

13 Aug A company of young people, 8 in all,came about 7 intending to stop only a few moments
but there was a heavy rain accompanied by thunder and lightning and we kept them all
night, besides a poor man and woman.

18 Aug Near night Harriet^Weed came with her two sisters and their husbands (-8in all); we got
tea for them and paid them for coming by giving them some cheese, apples, melons and
eggs. Harriet brought us 2 or3 quarts of peaches. ~^
Ellen Bussell's aunt & cousin came to visit. Wm. Bussellwent to meet them.

19 Aug Nehemiah White went to the depot to meet his two sisters.
A company of 8 from Troy walked from the depot to see us and, of course, had some dinner
because one man had lived near Canterbury and was acquainted with them. C. Miller
sent his team to carry them back to the railroad and charged them $1 .00.

23 Aug A man from the West Indies came with a lady from N.Y., bought $4.00 "which is quite
a speck in these days."

25 Aug Many visitors "to look around and many of them are our neighbors, the Polocks were in
the lot. The parents of the! Williams called here this afternoon, bought 2 baskets etc.
and expressed their thankfulness for our helping their children the night itstormed so.
Van Benthuysen, the printer, his wife and some friends from NY called.

27 Aug Two carriage loads from Schenectady of women and children walked about and enjoyed it
very much. Ladies drove their own teams.

2 Sept Some of the Durant children came to see us and brought a basket of very extra grapes they
raised in the hothouse. They are some of the company that was caught in the rain three
weeks ago.

3 Sept. Benj. Chick has been here a week canning corn and tomatoes.
Davis, the man in Albany C. Miller buys coal from, brought his daughter and wanted us
to board her a while.

5 Sept Some of the neighbors came to have their teeth fixed and had dinner.

7 Sept All sisters work atcanning. 88 doz. corn and beans today. The men have to be up all
night. They boil itlonger than they used to, hoping this will make it keep.

8 Sept Nathan Wood and Josiah, his uncle, came to see Sarah Ann.
C. Miller's sister,her daughter and grandson came to see him.

10 Sept Benj. Chick has soldered about 400 dozj^orns & tomatoes.

14 Sept Some company. One woman, separated from her husband, accidentally met her two boys
here. She did not know they were here but thought they were with her husband in Buffalo.
"It affected her very much . "

16 Sept " W e are allbusily engaged, not one moment to spare. -They are driving the canning tothe
utmost. Benj. Chick cannot get along as fast as Collins which means Daniel and James Burk
are up nights a great deal."

17 Sept "C. Miller went to Albany to the placed called Hurstville with Mary Jane Price. He
(Hurst?) was poormaster when we took the girl, then an orphan of 6 or7. Now she is 16
and he has consented to take her forshe does not want to be a Shaker. "

26 Sept Harvard Ministry arrived. After they had been in bed an hour 7 Groveland Elders Chauncy
Sears and Alexander Work arrived, having walked from the depot. (Elder David Hawkins
already there from ML.)

27 Sept Adda Woods's mother came to see her.

5 Oct Jesse took Zeviah (Spiers)(83),Elizabeth Train (69) and Betsy Hawkins on a ride toCohoes
and vicinity.

7 Oct Jesse took Maria Gil let(65) and Almira Treadway (51) for a ride.
Brother from Canaan named Levi David,, of Jewish descent, has lived at Canaan 17 years.

11 Oct Charlotte Youngs (77) and Sylphia Brown, her cousin, came to spend the afternoon. The
mother of the Merryfield boys came to see them and the boys went home with her. A
woman came from Tivoli with two boys.

12 Oct Two ladies came to have Ephraim fix their teeth.

14 Oct Elder Daniel has been planing some basket stuff forLydia. He is to take itto Lebanon
to spl it
because he can spl itlonger stuff therethan here.

17 Oct Elizabeth and Phebe Ann came out of the kitchen and Abbie and Laura go in. Elizabeth
has been in for 8 weeks.

20 Oct "Some coloured gentry came, bought a basket."
El izabeth Ingham Green came to see her sister Adelaide, and her mother at the 2d Order.

22 Oct. Freegift went to Albany to get some board suitable for coffins.

25 Oct Sisters begin cutting applies - did 14 barrelstoday.

29 Oct Staijunton Buckingham fell backwards down the stairs in the barn and hurft himself quite
badly.

2 Nov Another load of herbs taken to clairvoyant Doctress Entwistle in Troy.


3 Nov Elizabeth Seely is making citron or Mango pickles,

4 Nov Sisterscut 19 barrels of applies forapple butter.

5 Nov Women from Troy came to get us to take her children, her husband is in the Army, but
we did not take them,

7 Nov A man and woman came with 2 boys and 2 girls, named Jameson, children of theirbrother
who died with lockjaw three weeks ago. The oldest girl14, youngest 7. David Buckingham
tooks girls to SF ,boys remain here on trial.

9 Nov Alonzo Fairchild, the mason, finishes some work on their range and goes back to 2d Order
"where he is buildinga very large cistern that holds over 100 hhds."

19 Nov Freegift went to Albany to take some samples of "scollups eyes 11 that came from Long Island.
Ira Tuttle wanted he should make market for them.
17 hired men and 2 Deaner boys help Charles Brackett cut dry herbs with the machine.

24 Nov "This is Thanksgiving Day. The good Ministry (who had arrived, the day before) attended
meeting, gave the love with a good testimony against sin. After union meeting an d dinner,
all went about their usual employment."

26 Nov A woman came to see the Shakers. Was directed wrong and went to Waterford instead of
Watervliet and walked from there to here. Quite dark when she arrived. (She was sent
to SF.)

1 Dec "The gift to prepare to open our mines was administered this evening."

3 Dec We rose at 4 a.m., meeting at 4:30 and the duties of the day began. L(ydia) A(nnas)

5 Dec Elder Frederick Evans came. Told them "the great and famed stone barn ... at Hancock
was burned on last Thursday, containing 100 tons of hay and 2 or 3 hay wagons. Cause
unknown."

8 Dec Brought Rosella Jameson from SF to ChF where her two brothers are.

17 Dec A man from Vermont to see Elder Giles about raising queen bees.

21 Dec Benj. Storks took 7 hogs in his sleigh to be butchered and brought home for the hired men
to eat.

25 Dec We heard the Covenant read in morning meeting. Joseph, Acy (Seat-on),Mathew (Radiken),
Mary (Nelson) and Ellen (Bussell)all signed.

29 Dec Jesse took two Jameson girls to their friendsin Troy. It did not seem that they were the
right kind to make Shakers. The boys remain at present. Nehemiah thinks considerable
of the youngest one.
