7 Mar "There seems to be some commotion among some of the upper 10."
11 Mar The Ministry and Elders had a meeting with all the deacons and people in care,
gave some instructions about economy in cooking and baking. They recommend
less shortening and inputting buttermilk in pie crust to make it tender."
19 Mar Elder Brother & Daniel went to Albany to appear before the grand jury in
relation to Thomas Garigan's stealing some money from Ephraim last January.
5 Apr A girl 12 years of age came here to stay. Her mother and uncle brought her
from Schenectady. Her name is Mary Catherine Wick.
8 Apr Elder Brother & C. Miller went to Schenectady with Justice Harwood regarding
the Vedddr farm, of which Justice is about to purchase a part.
9 Apr D. Sherman went to Albany to ship a load of bonnets to NYC for Van Sanford
to dispose of for us.
10 Apr G. Miller & D. Sherman went to Albany with a load of brooms and seeds and
returned DAB's sewing machine for another kind for sewing brethren to work on.
11 Apr G. Miller left for Illinois.
13 Apr Ghas. Edward Holms was brought by his sister from NYC to stay "if he should
like the place."
15 Apr Thomas Talbot started for Illinois on railroad "to take charge of a farm
belonging to the ChF."
20 Apr Daniel went to Albany with "stilled water" for Dexter the druggist to be used
for the use of vessels at sea."
N. White took Mary Catherine Wick to her uncle in Schenectady.
G. Miller returned from Illinois "quite out of health."
21 Apr "The workmen all absent today from dinner at noon. (Returned at tea time
Sun. and brought one of the stars for the Union."
23 Apr Twelve sisters and two brethren from 2d Order and 2d Family came to clean
the Meeting House.
26 Apr D. Sherman and Frederick Griffenham with all his boys go to River Farm to
set out onions.
Sisters all turn out to clean up the dooryards.
27 Apr "The sisters stain the floor in the new Meeting House where the world occupy
under the raised seats."
7 May Eliza Ask died.
12 May "Jannett (Angus) is very sick which casts a gloom over pretty much all the
family.''
22 May Anne E. Scriven came here to stay all night. She begged for a further
privilege to live here but it seemed to be thought not advisable."
23 May "Edward Welch's wife who has just moved into the Niskayuna house, died this
morning quite sudden. They have lately come from England and Edward works
for us. She leaves 4 children under six years of age."

24 May Some of the hired men use Ministry horses to attend her funeral "away beyond
East Troy ... in a Gatholic burying ground."
26 May G.M. took some medicine to the Welch boy in the Niskayuna house whose mother
just died.
2 June Dr. Wade came to vaccinate the children.
4 June "A minister :jcame here to convert us to the true religion as he seemed to
think we are in error. He stayed all night and went away without any converts."
9 June Accident happened to a team. They ran away with young man named Walden and
Sun. young woman named Alvira Winn. Wagon so damaged Shakers loaned them one to
go home with.
12 June D. Sherman takes Elizabeth Seely and Lucy Fuller to Schenectady "to get a few
things for the rooms the public use."
17 June C. Miller, Ann B., Jannet Angus & Moriah Treadway go to the river farm and
called to see the orphan children at the Niskayuna house.
19 June Take a "load of paper rags" to the tin shop and purchased some tin of Andrew
Van Patten.
27 June Fred Griffenham takes his leave of us today. He goes to Albany to be settled
with.
28 June Geo. Price returns from NYC and brings two boys with him. They have a sick
mother who is not expected to live long.
23 June - Much dealing in stnawberries.

24 July A stage load of people camenhere from the Home Lawn. One or two more coach
loads were here at the same time. They traded some."
Ruth Whipple came here this afternoon to get us to take her little girl,

a cooking range for the 1st House kitchen.
Sarah Dean took the little girls south in the woods for wintergreen. As
they started out quite late,in the evening quite a number of brethren and
sisters went out in the woods to hunt for them.
6 Aug Ezekial Copley "closed his life."
14 Aug Adelaide Ingham and Samantha Bowie go to 2d Family to help make soap.
18 Aug Joseph Pelham spoke to audience at public meeting and "gave them a very good

21 Aug The Troy Sundayschool children came here to have a picnic in our dooryard
and sung in front of the dwelling: house.
23 Aug D. Sherman and J. Decked go to the Upper Aqueduct after catnip.
Took Betsey Harrison, Elizabeth Seely and Almira Treaday to see the cooking range
25 Aug Eldress Perlina Bates preached to the assembly at public meeting today.
3 Sept "In the afternoon, Chauncy took Freegift to Albany. He is going to the
seashore for his health." (he is 75 yrs. old.)
Anna Cole died. Aged 92.years, 5 days.
10 Sept Went to West Troy to get "sremoniurn."
13 Sept Brought a plumber from Albany to see about putting a range in the kitchen.
Elder Brother, Catherine, Phebe Ann and Abby went to Rosendale to pick
"silk grass."
14 Sept C. Miller & Geo. Price went to Albany and purchased "the range and a number
of pans, boiler and kettles, a cooking lantern etc."
16 Sept Took down arches in the cook room to prepare for new range.
18 Sept Brought out from Albany the plumbers and masons to put up the range.
21 Sept Finally finished installing the range.
25 Sept Ship 1000 strawberry plants to Pennsylvania.
26 Sept "This day is used by the President of the U.S. to be kept as a day of pasting.
and prayers throughout all the northern states."
27 Sept Daniel goes to River Farm and draws four loads of larkspur seed.

28 Sept The Office Sisters pay Eveline Deaner for whortleberries with a bed. Last
week she was paid in white cotton cloth.
3 Oct C. Miller starts on his northern journey this morning and "takes Lewis Ihayer
with him to live with his mother as there is no prospect of his making a
Believer."
4 Oct "Stanton B. & Catherine Vedder, alsol Mariah Iread&ay go to Albany to spend
the day, "we put up at Owens."
(This would indicate another of the authors of these Journals - either
Mariah or Catherine.)
5 Oct Alexander Miller came to see Chauncy, his brother, on business.

8 Oct Cornelius Youngs leaves and D. Sherman takes him to his aunt in Albany.
Two tin pedlars came and we sold the woolen rags to one of them for tinware.
10 Oct Finish getting apples from the Niskayuna farm. The amount they will have
for fall and winter will be 22 barrels.
19 Oct Josephine Orcutt is taken toher aunt and uncle to stay. "T
This evening a man and woman came here with 2 boys and wanted to be taken hee
to stay. They stay all night.

28 Oct Zeviah Spiers, being 81 years old, came to the Office to pay a visit. "She
said this is the pleasantest birthday she ever spent."
29 Oct C. Miller goes toNY with Justice Harwood and Alexander Youngs "mostly to
assist them about their business."
3 Nov Have a morning meeting at 7:30. "We devote the day in searching our souls
Sun. and coming to judgment."
4 Nov "C. Miller stayed about home to make some arrangement for digging down the
hill from the upper spring to the cistern and laying the pipes down in the
ground, so as to supply the village better with water as there has been a
great lack."
Boys school started.
6 Nov "Stanton and hired men started digging on the hill from the spring to the
north to lay the pipe lower down to supply more water.
13 Nov Teams drawing popcorn from Niskayuna - 250 barrels from 7 aCRES.
"A woman came here to make application for help to relieve the wounded
in the hospitals."
17 Nov No more public meetings this season.
18 Nov "Ghauncy, Justice and Jesse went to see the Mayor of Albany about the relief
of wounded soldiers. Have concluded to give something for their relief in
sympathy for our common brotherhood but not to aid in the war."
19 Nov Two young Believerrjsisters came from SF to see their children who live at ChF.
26 Nov Still working on water lines on hill.
28 Nov Thanksgiving Day by Governor's appointment. "We had a very good and inte-
resting meeting in the morning and the afternoon we spent in washing the
kitchen wall.
4 Dec Daniel went to VanWranken's Corners to get his horses shod, then to Cohoes
for a load of barrels .
5 Dec In afternoon Chauncy, Ann & Abbie sent up on the hill where they are digging
the ditch; in some places it is 20 feet deep.
7 Dec "It rained in the night; the clay caved in and brought down the iron pipe,
it stopped the water going into the boiMer and some fears are entertained
about the range being injured."
9 Dec The brethren start boring logs to repair the aqueduct.

14 Dec Stanton and his men got the logs in the big ditch by working after dark or
by moonlight.
16 Dec 2d Family has a case of smallpox - 3 months old child.
19 Dec The child died and is buried today in our burying ground.
20 Dec Man and woman came after some stockings the sisters have been knitting
for them.
Electa Talmage died at SF.
21 Dec Water works finished.
28 Dec Child, Annie Lake, quite sick from her vaccination - arm very much swollen.

2 Jan Geo. DeWitt and son here to visit his children.
6 Jan "Laura DeWitt concluded to big, and .live with her parents in Albany and
Benjamin, her brother, on hearing his sister was going, concluded to go
also and Daniel delivered them to their parents."
7 Jan Large order of roots and herbs are taken to Albany to go by railroad to NYC
and then be shipped to England.
8 Jan When D. Sherman came borne, he left his team to open the barn doors and, it
being dark in the barn, he fell on some barrels and knocked out one tooth
and loosened several others .
9 Jan G. Copley, Ann B. & Moriah Treadway go to Albany to see about obtaining some
treasury notes.
10 JAN Annie Lake is taken to SF to see her mother.
12 Jan Meeting in a.m. attended as usual. In Afternoon meeting, Sister Ann called
for a song to be sung in remembrance of Brother Chauncy Miller who has gone
on a long journey in the western country."
21 JAN Three Army officers came in afternoon and wanted to look around and Sylvester
Prentiss escortdd them. One was a Capt. Watts who had served in Mexican War
and is now stationed on Potomac River.
24 Jan Asa Seatohu"is released from doing business" by the Ministry.
26 Jan It is feared they have smallpojtfat the SF.
4 Feb Sarah Taylor and Julia Conway come here"to roll palmleaf sheets for bonnets."
5 F&b "A stranger came here from NY witaph four little children, the oldest about 7
and youngest 4, and wanted Believers to take them and bring them up. After
trying three families without success, he concluded to return and set up a
Society of Shaker-s himself."

10 Feb "Peter Whitbeck brought a man and woman from the depot who came from St.
Louis and are going on a tour to Europe. Their name is Tuthill. The woman
professes to be a clairvoyant medium and practices medicine. They wished
to visit this place and get.- some information about the Shakers. We had some
conversation with them and gave them some books to read. They wished to stay
a day or so, said they wanted to get medicine when they return from England,
the woman's native place, andshe thinks she has a mission there."
28 Feb Daniel started to go to 2d Family!s mill but the wind blew so hard and
road so badly drifted, he had to return.
5 Mar Eldress Lavinia came (from SF ?) and Cecilia Slyde came with her to see her
little boys that live here. She brought Ninette, 2 years old, with her.
12 MAR Elder Sister and Lydia Annas go to SF and take two of little girls to see
their mothers - Thebes Wicks and Annie Lake.
13 MAR G. Miller receives letter telling of sudden death of Aaron Tompson, who
apparently had a store ',inNYCity.
14 Mar Alexander Youngs came tcrjsee G.M. about the Tompsonjaccount; also Wing of
Lansingburgh.
15 Mar G. Miller goes to NYCity on railroad.
22 Mar G. M. and Alexander Youngs return from NYCity.
24 Mar Henry Bisgrove and James McClain came to settle accounts with C.M. They
are both going west to live.
3 Apr Ministry came to visit and have a journal sent from So. Union with an account
of the war in those parts. The brethren and sisters gather in dining room
in evening to hear it read in evening.
Mill dam has been damaged by thaw and brethren work on it half the night.
7 Apr Ezna Scranton has concluded to return home and live with his father in Albany.
25 Apr N. White took all his boys to river farm to set out onions.
26 Apr Sisters turn out to rake dooryard.
28 Apr "It has been decided to have a load go from here to the east on a visit and
active preparations are being made towards getting ready.
29 Apr Townsend Miller, Chauncy's brother from Canastota, visdlts.
10 May A boy, Joseph Young, died at SF.

15 May Brought boy from Waterford, named Charles White.
17 May "While we were gone to evening meeting, William Whiting from Lebanon arrived
and wishes to stay over the Sabbath. He is on a journey peddling grape vines."
19 May "A man came here to subpoena some of our folks for witnesses concerning
Phebe Freeman's character but no one can do it to his sat^isfaction.
21 May Elder Brother went with Ann B. and Maria G. to Greenbush to attend the case
