16 Sept CM went to West Troy & got "a load of jugs & pots, a II imperfect and
less than 1/2 price."
20 Sophroni a/chose to leave & she was taken to Albany & put on the boat.for NYC.

23 Staying all night in the Office, they had: Wright & his wife from NYC who
had come to see CM; Adams & wife from Ph i I ade-l ph i a,
Jefferson Co., NY who
came to spend Sabbath with Shakers; and a man named Brainard.
24 John Decker went at 5 a.m. to get constables & a squire. "WE have been very
Sun. much annoyed of late with gunners on the Sabbath. They thought they would
take them up & see if if would not do some good... There was a number taken
up, one paid 137, the rest gave boil, some left their guns, etc."
25 John Decker-went to the Island to take charge of harvesting the popcorn;
he works in the field with the men, D a n i e l
draws home, James Stark cuts up
the corn stalks and all are then to husk at home in the evening.
26 Ann Durham left to live with her mother & was put "on the cars" with her

little girls taken out for a ride & had dinner

29 CC & CM to Schenectady to see about a farm for sale. A lady from Albany
bought 14 pr. socks; man affrom Argyle brought roots & herbs & was paid $10.
30 Frederick went to Albany to make arrangements about the squire & constables

1 Oct "They took up quite a number for stealing and shooting."
4 Caroline Cook wanted to leave so she was taken to Albany and put on the cars.
6 Emma Shaller taken to Albany-^ by NF.
7 CC, CM, CV & LA went to see the Ma I urnfarm.
15 Abigail Lemon "struck with a stroke of palsy" on Friday & still unable to
Sat. speak.

23 Two men named Philip came & "engaged the farm Tom has formerly had."
25 Caroline Vernoy let: it be known she was ready to leave. Accordingly, CM,
Elder Sister & AM accompanied her to Albany & left her with her sister.
26 Judge B u l lcame from Troy to see the Treadways about signing off some land
belonging to their father in Illinois but they did not sign.
27 Marinus Fa i rch i I d& family, 8 in all, came about 10 p.m.
28 Marinus Fairchild had supper at NF but stays at CF Office overnight.
Office has had 13 hired men to feed for the last 2 weeks.

The handwriting now changes, & continues to change about every month as the Sisters
in the Office rotate their jobs. It would seem that for a month some worked in the
kitchen & other in the store & the upper floors of the Office (guest rooms) and one
of the latter would keep the Journal. Not only is this apparent from the handwriting,
but also from the style & the spelling ability. That it is kept in the Office seems
positive since the.details noted are the dailxjasjmovements of the Office Trustees & Dea-

10 Obtained broom corn from an island between Albany & Troy.
13 A man came from NYC toget his little daughter who has been at NF a few
months. "They concluded she is too young to be taken here without her
mother."
Tina Seaton died.
14 William BusselI & Albert Lomas (teachers) went to Lebanon to visit their
school.
19 Daniel went to Troy,took pop corn, brooms, brushes & applesauce to sell.
20 Elder Bro CC & Daniel purchased a kettle for the new washhouse.
23 Kettle too small; took it back & got another.
27 Two visitors from Canterbury. One is Edward Fitts, the builder of the wash
mill, come to repair some failure in it. The other is Charles Edgerly who
is to teach someone how to make a new kind of soap.
30 Sisters wash with new soap; they call it very good.
5 Feb (Sun) "The morning meeting was begun with singing a hymn in commemoration of
Mother Lucy's birthday. We had considerab[dread & spoken about her; had
a good meeting." Our people had a singing meeting in p.m.
6 Chas. Edgerly leaves. Has been to each fmily to make a batch of soap for
them. Was paid $48 for his soap recipes.
8 1st & 2d Orders brethren cutting ice in stone quarry for both families.
13 Simon Groat came here after some snuff.
A woman named Clinton camejfrom NYC, wanted information. Sent her to SF .
23 Eliza Wells & PAB bottomed four chairs "with list."
29 D. Sherman & CM took Lucy Bates tojAlbany & put her on railroad for Schenec-
ectady. Sta^on took Maynard Treadway4(/& his baggage to Niskayuna where he

1 March "The Ministry brethren & Elder brethren are contriving a way to fill up
the gap. Rob Peter to pay Paul. No other way."
2 March Have decided that Stanton will take charge of farm, Philip Smith of stock,
no one found to take charge of garden.
6 Family deaconesses get a new counter & old one taken to Office.
7 School ends (for boys).
8 "I am trying to knit some head nets for sale."

be obliged to keep her, but we did not think so. Maria, her own sister, cannot be
persuaded to take her on & left without her."

3 Putting a preparation of "lime whiting & milk" on sisters' front room.
4 Josephine Orcutt taken to her mother's funeral.
Parents & grandfather of Slipner children came to visit them.
Michael Kelly left to seek employment elsewhere.
7 Aionzo Hill went to see his mother in West Troy.
9 Masons come to make a foundation for new part of garden shop. Finish 20th.
10 John Burk, who has worked for us as much as ten years, has been settled
with & is going west in search of employment to better his condition.
24 Sisters raking the dooryard. SB was helping but was sent for to attend
a jury concerning"some road in the neighborhood."
29 (Sun) A man came to get Delphine Mallette, said her mother was sick. JD, CV
& Ruth Green took her to Troy.
1 May 2d Order (NF) & 2d Family (WF) c l e a n i n g
the Meeting House. Three brethren
& 11 sisters to dinner at Office.
2 Harvard Ministry came to visit. Leave May 8th.
7 May Little Lemuel's father brought him back & bound him to DAB.
14 John Burk returned from Wisconsin & CM has hired him back.
Now have 23 hired men. Gang of 5 are putting roof on barn, finish on
16th, cost over $150.
17 Have been having many visitors buying strawberry plants. Apparently have
hired men and a boy who "are watering the strawberries from morning till
night." (These must be DAB's variety, the "Austin Strawberry11.)
26 Joiners nearly done with garden shop; hired men trying to paint it.
29 Whole family of Talbots has come from England & gone to River Farm house
to live.
2 June Henry Burk, one of the hired men, went to James Stark 's to be' married to
a young woman who has just come from England with the Talbots.
8 Ann Bowser dled.27 "Great excitement in strawberry business, many people come to see them."
Some from NYC, One i da, etc. Ship to NYC, Boston, Philadelphia, Rochester.
30 Daniel took berries to Troy. Got 9 shillings a bushel for gooseberries &
Sat. 18 pence a quart for strawberries.
"A Sunday school celebration was held in our woods. They were from
Schenectady, they took dinner in the woods & then marched up in front of
the dwellings & sung. Some of our school children came out & sung to them."

1 July Abigail Lemon died. She has beententirely blind 34 years. Aged qjter^&O.
20 We hear that Emily C. has taken her exit with a shoemaker. Goodbye.
24 JA & PAB are making "2 linen frocks" for C. Miller.
1 Aaug CM wrote 27 letters & took 28 boxes of strawberries to A l b a n y to
be sent by
express to different parts of the country.
2 CM took Eliza Ask, Abby Messenger & Matilda Wells to Saratoga Springs.
Returned Aug. 5th.
8 Five children named DeWitt - 4 girls & 1 boy - move from SF to CF.
9 Two sisters have come from Lebanon to live at NF.

23 Aug"A strange woman came here., stayed overnight, went to the Gathering Order (SF)
in the morning. She was dressed in a bloomer."
24 CM went to Van Vranken's Corners (Latham) to pay taxes.
5 Sept CM & Justice Harwood go to Michigan "to see about some land."

13 Clara DeWitt came to see her children. Their father was here Monday.
15 Dr. Wade came to see the little DeWitt boy who is sick. Their father has

17 Elder Sister B., Jannet & Lucy F. went to Albany "to see a new contrivance
for ironing."
22 Abby M. & Samantha B. "go out of the lower region, from among the pots &
kettles" and PAB & Moriah Finch take their place.
26 "The Sabbath schools from Crescent & that vicinity came here to have a
celebration. There were about 400 of them, they had a picnic dinner in
the dooryard. They marched through the garden & in front of the dwelling
house they had a short lecture & some singing; they then marched in the
orchard where they sung some more & our folks sang to them. They seemed
to have a good time."
27 Adelaide Ingham's sister, Elizabeth Green, and her 2 little girls came
from Watertown to visit.
9 Oct Brought a 12 year-old g i r lfrom Troy named Sarah Griswold. She will live
in the Stone Shop with the big girls.
16 The Prince of Wales & suite visit Albany today. CM and D. Sherman :show
good sense enough to stay away from there."
23 Began doing something to the schoolhouse, going to be an addition on it.
25 Elder Issachar & Brother Asa S. came & got Elder Bro CC"to go with them
to see something about a road."
1 Nov CM "has a white kitty in the barn."
2 CM sent some palm leaf to Kentucky.
"Last evening the Wide-a-wakes marched along the turnpike, p l a y i n g

drum & fife, & had their lights. They returned after 1 a.m.

5 Dr. McDermott came from Troy and Elder Bro CC, DAB, Lydia Annas & PAB
got spectacles.
7 Woman brings a girl named Emmy Williams she wanted us to take. Sent to
SF & they took her.
13 Elder Issachar still working on schoolhouse; it is nearly enclosed.
16 Nov Dr. McDermoft again. This time, E.W., M.T. and A.W. got spectacles.
17 Two loads of elecampane brought for CM. (This is an herb used in pre-
paring extracts for coughs, bronchitis, etc.)
21 Elder Bro CC, CM Jesse & some from SF go to West Albany to attend a court
regarding a proposed road in the town.
22 Daniel went to Mohawk River to get a load of damaged wheat from a canal
boat that had sunk. He gets it for chicken feed.
24 Four teams to Albany to get broom corn that came on the railroad from Illinois
29 Thanksgiving. Had meeting in a.m., regular duties in p.m.
Made 260 Ibs. sausage.
30 Went to Niskayuna to get broom corn shipped from Illinois, instead of
to Albany.

19 Edward Owen, the dentist, came from Albany. Made a set of teeth for
Matilda & a number of sisters had some packed.
25 Christmas. Had a "very pretty & satisfying meeting" in a.m. Elders had
been invited to WF for afternoon & evening. CM went to James Stark's &
traded off an old horse & got two new ones.
31 "The latter part of this year has been attended with great difficulty
on account of some troubles in government or political affairs in the
southern states that makes a panic in money matters thataffects us
considerably."

4 Jan Pres. Buchanan & Gov. Edwin Morgan appointed this day to be kept as a fast
forWiiliation and prayer. The whole Society assembled in Meeting House,
had a very satisfying time, instead of a fast we had a feast of good things.
15 Jan Rev. Welch & wife came for some pickles, got 150 in brine.
(This would be the Rev. Bartholomew Welch, the Baptist minister whose sermon
on the deplorable condition of Albany's cemeteries prompted the organization
of the Albany Rural Cemetery.)
16 Jan The young sisters are trying to weave some bonnets.
19 Jan Some people come from Schenectady who want two boys taken. We did not.
21 Jan Some brethren from each family with some hired men are getting ice from
pond to fill the ice houses.
27 Jan Ah^ 2d Family there is some rumor about Thomas O.G. running away and taking
more than belongs to him. Some brother brought him home.
28 Jan Took Thomas G. to officers in Albany.
30 Jan I am making some small work stands for sale.
3 Feb Aged Sister Eunice Johnson grows more and more feeble.

7 Feb Sister Eunice's1'spirit took the flight from this cold world of sorrow, never
to return." It is just 4 weeks since she came to the Office and made us a
visit."
10 Feb The Ministry attend our afternoon meeting and had "quite a gift to speak to
the family exhorting them to labor for the true'gift of repentence."
13 Feb George Price, Ann B., Abbie Messenger went to Schenectady "after some
cloth and dishes. Went to John Glute's took dinner, and an the way home
this side of Peter Lansing's, Ghauncy Miller overtook us. He has been gone
to the west six weeks."
18 Feb George Price and Nehemiah Whitev/went to Albany, "they saw the President. He
is on his journey to his place of residence."
19 Feb Elisa Wells is told she is to go to 2d Order to be Elder Sister and Aurilla
White is going to live with her. Elder Sister LucyyFairchild and Laura P.
are going to ChF to live.
21 Feb Lucy Fairchild came home yesterday to stay.
24 Feb The Ministry went to 2d Order, Sister Elisa Wells and Aurilla with them.

2 Mar "The hirelings are drawing wood as fast as they can for the snow is
nearly gone.
6 Mar "D. Sherman went to Albany with a load of garden seeds for the suffering in
